Abstract:
An apparatus for determining the position of one part, such as a movable operating head of a machine tool, relative to a reference position on another part, such as a base of the machine tool, includes an improved scale assembly on one part of the machine tool. This scale assembly includes a plurality of identical scale segments which are spaced apart and independently adjusted relative to a standard, such as a laser interferometer, so that any error in the positioning of one scale segment does not affect the other scale segments. A relatively coarse scale is associated with the plurality of identical scale segments to provide a unique representation for each of the identical scale segments. Suitable control circuitry switches between leading and lagging signal generators in a reading assembly mounted on the other part of the machine tool to avoid activating signal generators at transitions between scale segments.
Abstract:
AN IMPROVED MECHANISM FOR LOCATING AND LOCKING A TURRET OF A MACHINE TOOL WHICH IS INDEXIBLE ABOUT AN AXIS OF ROTATION WITH RESPECT TO A SLIDE INCLUDES FIRST AND SECOND TOOTHED MEMBERS LOCATED ON THE TURRET AND SLIDE RESPECTIVELY. LOCATED ADJACENT THE FIRST AND SECOND TOOTHED MEMBERS IS A THIRD TOOTHED MEMBER OPERABLE TO ENGAGE WITH THE FIRST AND SECOND MEMBERS TO ACCURATELY LOCATE THE FIRST TOOTHED MEMBER WITH RESPECT TO THE SECOND TOOTHED MEMBER TO THEREBY ACCURATELY POSITION THE TURRET. A LOCKING MEMBER IS LOCATED ADJACENT THE FIRST AND SECOND TOOTHED MEMBERS AND OPERABLE TO ENGAGE WITH AND LOCK THE FIRST AND SECOND TOOTHED MEMBERS AGAINST RELATIVE MOVEMENT THEREBETWEEN AFTER THE FIRST AND SECOND MEMBERS HAVE BEEN POSITIONED BY THE THIRD MEMBER TO THEREBY LOCK THE TURRET IN POSITION. ROTATION, RELEASE, POSITIONING AND LOCKING OF THE TURRET IS AFFECTED WITHOUT AXIAL MOVEMENT OF THE TURRET.
Abstract:
AN IMPROVED TURRET MECHANISM FOR SELECTIVELY ROTATING AN INDEXIBLE TURRET TO BRING TOOLS HELD THEREBY INTO AN OPERATIVE RELATION WITH A WORKPIECE INCLUDES CURVIC COUPLING FOR LOCKING THE TURRET IN A SELECTED ANGULAR POSITION. A CENTRAL SHAFT MEMBER OPERATIVELY ASSOCCIATED WITH THE TURRET AND HAVING A CAM FOLLOWER AFFIXED THERETO WHICH IS ROTATABLE WITH THE CENTRAL SHAFT, AND A CAM TRACK IN WHICH THE CAM FOLLOWER ROTATES AND WHICH EFFECTS AXIAL MOVEMENT OF THE CENTRAL SHAFT AND THE TURRET ASSOCIATED THEREWITH UPON MOVEMENT OF THE CAM FOLLOWER THROUGH THE CAM TRACK. ROTATION OF THE CENTRAL SHAFT IN IN ONE DIRECTION RAISES THE TURRET TO DISENGAGE THE TEETH OF THE CURVIC COUPLING AND INDEXES THE TURRET. ROTATION OF THE CENTRAL SHAFT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION LOWERS THE TURRET AND ANGAGES THE TEETH OF THE CURVIC COUPLING TO THEREBY LOCK THE TURRET IN A SELECTED POSITION. THE INDEXING MECHANISM ALSO INCLUDED STOP MEANS WHICH NORMALLY LIMIT THE ROTATION OF THE TURRET SO THAT THE TURRET MAY ONLY BE ROTATED TO ITS NEXT OPERATIVE POSITION. THIS CONSTRUCTION ENABLES THE TURRET TO BE RAPIDLY AND EFFICIENTLY UNLOCKED, AUTOMATICALLY INDEXED TO A NEW POSITION, AND THEN LOCKED IN THE NEW POSITION WITH A SUFFICIENT FORCE SO THAT INADVERTENT ROTATION OF THE TURRET OUT OF THE NEW POSITION WILL NOT OCCUR DUE TO VIBRATION OF THE TURRET.
Abstract:
A trepanning tool that is characterized by the provision of a cylindrical cutting head projecting coextensively from a shank that has an axis of rotation. Consumable cutting elements are releasably attached to the cutting head in axially projecting relationship therewith and these elements are also releasably secured against movement radially, circumferentially and axially of the cutting head. The tool also has a relieved wall section in the cutting head extending axially and circumferentially so as to provide a means of chip egress during the cutting operation.
Abstract:
Controlled power supply system for connection to an AC source and having two oppositely connected silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs) for conducting current in opposite directions to an electrical load. Two sawtooth waves of opposite slope and phasedisplaced by 180* are combined with an error signal to determine the firing times of the SCRs. The error signal represents the difference between a desired value and the actual value of a load variable, such as rotational speed when the load is an electric motor. Each sawtooth wave has a period equal to the AC source signal and during each cycle has a straight line slope for 270*, is abruptly reset to a reference level, and remains at the reference level for the remaining 90* of the cycle.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for guiding a group of slivers through a drafting unit while progressively reducing the width of the group in its course through successive drafting zones of the unit to ensure that the fibers along the longitudinal side edges of adjacent slivers are intermingled throughout the width of the web to obviate the formation of feather-edge selvages on the individual slivers and to ensure homogeneity and substantial uniformity of the fibers throughout the width of the web being drafted. Also, evener roll means is provided for varying the rate of feed of the respective slivers entering the unit in accordance with, and to compensate for, variations in density of the slivers.
Abstract:
An elongated insert for metal cutoff tools of the type shown in Novkov U.S. Pat. No. 2,846,756 characterized by the presence of a thin layer of dampening material interposed beneath and behind the carbide cutting tip to improve the cutting characteristics of the same. The thin sheet of material or layer is contoured for coplanar relationship with the V-shaped bottom surface of the shank portion of the tool.
Abstract:
AN IMPROVED COILER ASSEMBLY FOR COILING SLIVER IN A STATIONARY CONTAINER INCLUDES A COILER HEAD WHICH IS SIMULTANEOUSLY ROTATED BY A FIRST DRIVE TRAIN ABOUT AN AXIS WHICH IS OFFSET FROM A CENTRAL AXIS OF THE CONTAINER AND BY A SECOND DRIVE TRAIN ABOUT THE CENTER AXIS OF THE CONTAINER. ROTATION OF THE COILER HEAD ABOUT THE FIRST AXIS RESULTS IN THE FORMATION OF A COIL OF SILVER IN THE CONTAINER WHILE ROTATION ABOUT THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE CONTAINER DISPLACES LOOPS OF THE COIL OF SILVER RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER. AN ECCENTRIC IS PROVIDED FOR ADJUSTING THE POSITION OF THE COILER HEAD RELATIVE TO THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE CONTAINER TO ENABLE SILVER OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES TO BE COILED IN THE SAME RELATIONSHIP WITH A WALL OF THE CONTAINER. A TRANSMISSION MEANS FOR CONNECTING THE DRIVE TRAINS TO A SOURCE OF POWER INCLUDES A PLURALITY OF PAIRS OF GEARS SO THAT THE GEAR RATIO OF THE TRANSMISSION MEANS AND THE RATE AT WHICH THE COILER HEAD IS ROTATED AROUND THE CENTRAL AXIS OF THE CONTAINER CAN BE ADJUSTED TO VARY THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE LOOPS OF SILVER ARE DISPLACED RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER.
