An electrically actuated control valve controls a hydraulic fluid flow to the adjusting cylinder. At least one electrically actuated switching valve blocks or admits a hydraulic fluid flow. A control unit generates control signals for the control valve and the switching valve. A regulating circuit supplies a pulse-width-modulated regulating signal for regulating a mean current of the control valve. A pulse-width-modulated control signal controls a mean current of the switching valve. The same supply voltage is applied to the switching valve and to the control valve. A pulse-duty factor of the control signal for the switching valve is referred to a pulse-duty factor of an adjusting signal for the control valve.

An improved method for controllably positioning the plunger of a solenoid apparatus at a target position between its two extreme positions. The plunger is spring biased to a retracted position, and an electrical coil is intermittently pulsed to drive the plunger against the spring bias toward an extended position, such that the plunger oscillates about the target position. A precise, stable control of the plunger's oscillating motion about the target position is achieved by continuously measuring the plunger's actual position, in real time, based on a series of measurements of electrical current conducted through the electrical coil when it is being pulsed.

A system and method for pulse-width modulation of multiple solenoid-operated valves in an electrohydraulic servo system employing a microprocessor-based digital controller. Solenoid-energization pulse widths are identified by comparison of operator command input signals to feedback signals responsive to actual motion at the actuators and loads. During each modulation period, all solenoids are initially selectively simultaneously energized as a function of binary information stored in an energization control register, and the shortest energization pulse duration is identified. After a delay corresponding to such shortest duration, during which the microprocessor may perform other control functions, the solenoids associated with such shortest duration are selectively de-energized as a function of binary information stored in a de-energization control register. The next-shortest duration is then identified, and the process again delays for a time equal to the difference between such next-shortest duration and the previous duration. The process of identifying pulse durations of increasing length and correspondingly deenergizing the solenoids continues until all pulse durations have been accommodated or until the modulation period terminates, at which point the entire control process rebegins.

Two magnetic valves, one of which reduces the pressure and the other one of which increases the pressure by which the displacement of a positioning member is controlled, only one of them operated at a time in accordance to the sign of the error signal, are operated in a pulsed mode with variable pulse width when the error signal is within a range of low absolute value and in a continuous mode of operation when the error signal has a higher absolute value. Variation of the magnitude of the error signal within the intermittent valve operation range controls pulse width variation. Hysteresis is provided in a transition between operating modes of a valve by a time delay of the mode change after the error signal has risen or fallen past a threshold value of signal. High displacement resolution is obtained as well as independence from effect of temperature drifts and magnetic valve characteristics.

A control system 54 for a doser type hydraulic actuator 56 is disclosed. The doser actuator includes a pair of unequal area pistons 18, 20 on a common shaft 16 which are moved incrementally by injecting into or removing from a control pressure chamber metered quantities or doses of fluid. The doses are metered by timed openings of solenoid valves 32, 34 connecting the control pressure chambered to a supply 44 or return 48 pressure sources. The control system includes a base pulse width signal generator 106 which pulse modulates the solenoids as a function of the error between a requested position and an actual position. The base pulse width is modified by a correction means 108, 110, 112 when the error is within a predetermined band width. The correcting means compensates for the variations of the actuator when its response is uncertain with respect to the base pulse width.

A typical alternating current two phase servomotor has two windings displaced 90.degree.; these windings are normally identified as the reference winding and the control winding. Rotational direction and speed of the motor may be controlled by applying AC voltages of the proper waveform amplitude and phase relationship to these windings. When controlling the direction of rotation and speed of such alternating current servomotors in accordance with a DC error signal, pulse width modulation is utilized. The DC error signal is compared with a periodic varying function and its inverse to generate a series of pulses that are logically combined with a square wave and its complement during an enable period to generate a first and second series of pulses each having a width related to the magnitude of the error signal and coupled to energize the control winding of the alternating current servomotor. Similarly, a second periodic signal and its inverse are used to generate pulses for the reference winding. The second periodic signal is displaced 180.degree. in phase from the first periodic signal used for the control winding above. The DC error signal is compared with the second periodic function and its inverse to generate a second series of pulses each having a width related to the magnitude of the error signal. The second series of pulses is logically combined with a square wave and its complement during an enable period to produce output pulses to the reference winding. The motor energizing signals control a power switching amplifier connected to the respective windings of the motor to be controlled and responsive to the appropriate pulse width modulated signals.
