摘要： The present invention discloses a liquid crystal display device with improved viewing angle dependency upon contrast and color, comprising a liquid crystal cell having a pair of substrates each equipped with transparent electrodes and a liquid crystal layer positioned therebetween, polarizers disposed on opposite sides of the cell and a compensation plate disposed between at least one of the polarizers and the cell, in which at least one layer of the compensation plate is an aligned film comprising a liquid crystalline polymer or a polymer having a specific molecular structure, and a refractive index in a direction perpendicular to a plane of the film is larger than the minimum refractive index in a direction parallel to the plane.

摘要： A liquid crystal cell display device including a liquid crystal cell comprising a pair of substrates having transparent electrodes and aligning films, a liquid crystal composition with a positive dielectric anisotropy positioned between the substrates, major axes of the liquid crystal molecules being aligned nearly parallel in a plane parallel to the substrate when a field is applied and the liquid crystal molecules being twisted in an angle of 120.degree. to 360.degree. in a direction perpendicular to the substrate; a pair of polarizers positioned on opposite sides of the cell; and one or more birefringent layers positioned between the cell and at least one of the polarizers in which a maximum refractive index directions at a planes contacting the polarizer and the liquid crystal cell, are tilted with respect to a plane parallel to the substrate, angles made between each of the directions and the parallel plane are symmetrical one another with regard to a plane parallel to the substrate when angles made between the substrate and maximum refractive index directions positioned between the contacting planes of the birefringent layers are continuously distributed.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device including (1) a liquid crystal cell in which a liquid crystal layer with a liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy is sandwiched between a pair of substrates each having at least one electrode, and the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer are homogeneously aligned between the substrates, (2) a pair of polarizers disposed so as to sandwich the liquid crystal cell therebetween and (3) at least one birefringent layer sandwiched between the liquid crystal layer and the polarizer, in which the maximum refractive index direction within the plane of the birefringent layer is substantially perpendicular to the aligning direction of the liquid crystal molecules. The device is excellent particularly in highly multiplexing driving characteristic as a black and white light shutter or a color display device.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display cell having a layer of a twisted-nematic liquid crystal material with a positive dielectric anisotropy constant and constructed such that a plurality of voltage potentials applied to the liquid crystal cell may firstly induce a Freedricksz transition of the liquid crystal material and then select either one of first and second metastable states caused by relaxation of the liquid crystal material succeeding the Freedricksz transition. A first voltage potential is adjusted higher than a threshold voltage necessary to cause changes from an initial state to the metastable states, a second voltage potential to select one of the metastable states is adjusted in comparison with a voltage potential necessary to switch between the metastable states, and a third voltage potential is applied as a modulation voltage during or succeeding the application of the second voltage potential. By applying at least one of these voltage potentials, the modulation of the metastable states can be carried out, thereby causing arbitrary changes in transmittance of the liquid crystal cells and achieving a multilevel gray scale in the liquid crystal display device.

摘要： A color filter layer for a color liquid crystal display device is provided, including a plurality of color filters each formed on delineated stripes of transparent electrodes formed substantially parallel to each other on a transparent insulating substrate.
