Abstract: A capacitor-discharge ignition system for a two-stroke internal combustion engine has a trigger coil which during forward rotation of the crankshaft discharges a capacitor through the primary coil of an ignition transformer to produce an appropriately timed ignition spark. The discharge and spark occur when a magnet mounted on the flywheel of the engine intercepts the trigger coil at a crankshaft or piston position in the vicinity of top dead center. The trigger coil discharges the capacitor by supplying a trigger signal to the control gate of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) located in the discharging path between the capacitor and the primary coil of the ignition transformer. The primary coil, which is connected to the cathode of the SCR, is mounted on a stator core intercepted by the magnet on the flywheel no less than 60.degree. after top dead center. If, for any reason, the crankshaft of the engine should be rotated in the reverse direction, the voltage induced in the primary coil by the magnet reduces the gate-to-cathode bias on the SCR and causes any charge on the capacitor to discharge through the primary. Any ignition spark created is too far in advance of the top dead center position and sustained engine operation in the reverse direction, therefore, is inhibited.

Abstract: The disclosure describes an ignition coil module for internal combustion engines and method of manufacture thereof. The module is mounted on a ferromagnetic core having a plurality of discrete leg portions with mating cross-bar portions. The module includes an ignition coil encapsulated within a cup-shaped plastic housing which is disposed about the mating portions of the core. A separate trigger coil is also encapsulated within the housing and a separate core pin is axially fitted within the trigger coil. The core pin includes a shank portion and an enlarged pole portion disposed externally of said housing adjacent one of the core legs. The outer ends of the core legs and the pole portion of the core pin, which provides a separate flux path, are disposed approximately on the same circumference adjacent to the permanent magnets carried by a rotor used in conjunction with the ignition coil. The core pin is asymmetrical with its pole portion offset toward the adjacent core leg. In an alternative embodiment, the pole portion is disposed at an obtuse angle to the shank portion of the pin.

Abstract: Breakerless capacitor discharge ignition system for internal combustion engines in which a charge coil and ignition coil are disposed on ferromagnetic core. A changing flux is established by rotation of permanent magnets past the core. The charge coil is connected to charge a capacitor in circuit with a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) for discharging the capacitor through the primary winding of an ignition transformer. The charge coil and transformer are wound on the core such that voltages of opposite polarity are simultaneously induced therein by the changing magnetic flux. A half way voltage of one polarity charges the capacitor and a voltage of opposite polarity induced in the secondary winding by the changing magnetic flux triggers the SCR to its conductive state discharging voltage stored on said capacitor through the primary winding of the ignition coil.

Abstract: Rotor for a magnetomotive device in the form of an annular casting having a cavity or slot formed in the periphery thereof. The cavity includes locating surfaces. A permanent magnet is held in clamping relation within said cavity between a pair of pole pieces which include arcuate pole faces coaxial with the rotor. Abstract: A permanent magnet field means for use in a dynamoelectric machine comprises a magnet ring received in a supporting ring of ferromagnetic material. The magnet ring includes a circular array of arcuate magnets and a carrier of non-magnetic material in which the magnets are fixedly embedded. The magnet ring has a single axially extending gap located between the adjacent ends of two neighboring magnets. A spreading element placed in the gap spreads the magnet ring into tight engagement with the supporting ring. In some cases, this expansion of the magnet ring is used by itself to hold the magnet ring to the supporting ring in the finished device. In other cases, an adhesive is used between the supporting ring and the magnet ring and the expansion of the magnet ring is used to hold the magnet ring tightly to the supporting ring until the adhesive sets, the adhesive thereafter being the principal agent fixing the magnet ring to the supporting ring.
