Abstract: A tool for cryosurgery for handling tissue is disclosed, which is particularly suited for ophthalmic applications. The tool for cryosurgery (1) comprises a tubular body (2), a container (3) positioned within the tubular body (2) for holding cryogenic fluid and a treatment tip (4) connected to a distal end (2a) of the tubular body (2). A capillary (5) for transporting cryogenic fluid from the container (3) to the treatment tip (4) is also provided. The treatment tip (4) comprises a closed off end tip (6) and a shaft (7) of thermally insulating material having an inner lumen (8) with a diameter (dl) which is larger than an outer diameter (do) of the capillary (5), the shaft (7) being sealingly coupled to the closed off end tip (6).

Abstract: Provided herein is a system with a safety lock that is configured to at least partially prevent use of a surgical instrument. A foot switch assembly is operably configured to control the surgical instrument and has multiple switches. A memory is present for storing a predetermined switch sequence associated with the switches of the foot switch assembly, as well as a control unit that is configured to determine whether a series of input switch actuations from the foot switch assembly corresponds to the predetermined switch sequence, and if so, deactivating the safety lock in response to the series of input switch actuations corresponding to the predetermined switch sequence. Also provided are various embodiments of a foot switch assembly for controlling a surgical instrument.

Abstract: An active irrigation system for controlling delivery of irrigation fluid to a surgical site includes a chamber having at least one fluid port for introducing an irrigation fluid from a fluid source into the chamber and delivering the irrigation fluid to a surgical site. A variable pressure source is provided in fluid communication with the chamber and is configured to pressurize the chamber. A pressure sensor also in fluid communication with the chamber monitors the pressure within the chamber and a controller adjusts the variable pressure source to maintain the desired irrigation pressure within the chamber.

Abstract: A system for positioning a conduit within an ophthalmic surgical field comprises a conduit (12), a first fixation point (14) and a second fixation point (15). The first fixation point (14) comprises base structure (16) arranged to be secured in a fixed location, and a grip arrangement (18) configured to hold the conduit (12). The grip arrangement (18) is mounted on the base structure (16) by way of a ball joint structure (20, 22), with the ball joint structure (20, 22) being arranged to allow pivoting and rotational movement of the grip arrangement (18) with respect to the base structure (16). The second fixation point (15) is positioned remote from the first fixation point (14) at a predefined distance therefrom. A method for positioning a conduit with an ophthalmic surgical field is also described.
