Abstract: A pedal unit for a vehicle has a sensor surface which includes at least two functional regions and is designed to detect an actuation by the driver. The pedal unit also has at least one evaluation and control unit coupled to the sensor surface and designed to evaluate an actuation of one of the at least two functional regions detected by the sensor surface and, as a function of this evaluation, control a vehicle function associated with the corresponding functional region of the sensor surface. At least one region of the sensor surface is raised or lowered and enables a haptic differentiation between the at least two functional regions of the sensor surface.

Abstract: A foot-activated controller that communicates with at least one medical device is disclosed. This controller may incorporate a number of features. Multiple displays may be positioned on the controller for depicting the functionality of its various actuators. “Tapping” or partially depressing an actuator may cause an output that is representative of its functionality to be generated on its corresponding controller display, while fully depressing an actuator may initiate execution of its assigned function. The function assigned to each of the various actuators may be programmed by an external computer that may communicate with the controller over an appropriate communication link and via a communication port on the controller. Different audible feedbacks may be assigned to the various actuators, for instance to provide an audible indication of the function being executed.

Abstract: A footswitch apparatus for remotely controlling a surgical instrument. The footswitch apparatus preferably includes a base and a footpedal movably mounted to the base. The footpedal is movable within set upward and downward limits. In one mode of operation, the downward travel of the footpedal is resisted by different springs and different ranges of travel. The footpedal position is sensed and the operation of the surgical instrument is altered depending on which of the ranges the footpedal is in. This gives the operator constant tactile feedback as to which range of travel the footpedal is in. In addition, in a second mode of operation, the multiple springs are decoupled and only a single spring is experienced throughout the range of travel. This provides a flexibility so that the same footswitch apparatus can be used to operate a surgical instrument in a particular mode with linear control throughout the range of footpedal travel.

Abstract: A foot control assembly for use with power-driven equipment having reversible electrically-actuated operations such as, for example, power-operated medical examination tables and chairs.
