Abstract: Embodiments of an optical fiber ribbon cable are provided. The optical fiber ribbon cable includes a cable jacket having an interior surface defining a central bore, at least one buffer tube located in the central bore of the cable jacket, and at least one optical fiber ribbon disposed within the at least one buffer tube. The at least one optical fiber ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers, a polymer matrix surrounding the plurality of optical fibers, and a low-smoke, flame retardant (LSFR) coating surrounding the polymer matrix. The LSFR coating includes from 25 to 65% by weight of an inorganic, halogen-free flame retardant filler dispersed in a curable acrylate medium. Further, the inorganic, halogen-free flame retardant filler includes particles having, on average, a maximum outer dimension of 5 microns.

Abstract: Fiber coatings with low Young's modulus and high tear strength are realized with coating compositions that include an oligomeric material formed from an isocyanate, a hydroxy acrylate compound and a polyol. The oligomeric material includes a polyether urethane acrylate and a di-adduct compound, where the di-adduct compound is present in an amount of at least 2.35 wt %. The reaction mixture used to form the oligomeric material may include a molar ratio of isocyanate:hydroxy acrylate:polyol of n:m:p, where n may be greater than 3.0, m may be between n−1 and 2n−4, and p may be 2. Young's modulus and tear strength of coatings made from the compositions increase with increasing n. Coatings formed from the present oligomers feature high tear strength for a given Young's modulus.

Abstract: A method for making oligomers is described. The method includes reacting a polyol with a precursor having mixed functionality. The precursor includes a curable functional group and an isocyanate group capable of reacting with an alcohol group of the polyol. The precursor reacts with the alcohol group of the polyol to form a urethane linkage and to add a covalently bonded curable functional group to the polyol. The oligomers can be included in coating compositions for optical fiber and lead to coatings having improved tear strength.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides impact-resistant secondary coatings for optical fibers. The secondary coatings are obtained as cured products of a curable coating composition that includes an alkoxylated bisphenol-A diacrylate and an alkoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate, or an alkoxylated bisphenol-A diacrylate and a tris[(acryloyloxy)alkyl] isocyanurate.
