A method and apparatus for tapered peeling of veneer to form a curved veneer and clipping the curved veneer into discreet sheets by adjusting the angular relationship of the clipping knife to the axis of rotation of the bolt being peeled thereby to clip the veneer along lines substantially radial to the curvature of the veneer adjacent to the point of clipping.In the preferred arrangement two clippers are used in series and their angular relationship adjusted relative to the axis of rotation of the bolt to produce a veneer sheet with substantially parallel sides and to remove a substantially triangular piece between adjacent clipped sheets.

A process for preparation of long wood strands is disclosed. Long wood strands are required for the production of structural lumber products. These strands must be split, and a method of splitting logs into longitudinal-grain wood strands comprises the steps of radially splitting a log substantially along the grain of the log into a plurality of sector shaped segments, parallel splitting each of the sector shaped segments along the grain of the segments into a plurality of substantially parallel slabs, and further splitting each of the parallel slabs substantially along the grain of the slabs into a plurality of longitudinal-grain wood strands.

A method of converting lignocellulosic materials into various useful products, the method being controlled to produce the different products in accordance with the demand for them in the market. All of the original lignocellulosic material is used in this method. An important product obtained from this method is lumber engineered and dimensioned in accordance with the demand, and having predetermined characteristics.

A system for interacting with a person browsing a web site has an Internet-connected server and a connected data repository, and software executing on the server from a non-transitory physical medium. The software provides an identity function identifying the person, a selection function checking the data repository for stored information regarding the identified person, including any tracking rules associated with the identified person, and one or more tracking functions monitoring and recording behavior of the person browsing the web site. The one or more tracking functions follow the tracking rules, if any, associated with the identified person in monitoring and recording behavior of the browsing person.

A preferred method for acquiring information during an underground drilling operation includes providing a sensing device capable of acquiring information concerning the underground drilling operation from a down-hole location on a selective basis in response to an input from the surface, and drilling for a first period of time. The preferred method also includes sending the input to the sensing device after drilling for the first period of time, and drilling during a second period of time while acquiring the information using the sensing device.

The orientation of strands relative to a selected axis is determined by analyzing a digitized grey scale image to select edge pixels therefrom that may define the edges of strands segmenting the image into a plurality of subimages and processing one of the subimages by defining pixel lines merging the pixel lines to form lines and culling selected one of the lines in the subimage. The subimage is then combined to co-terminus other of the subimages to form a combined subimage which is processed in the same manner by merging pixel lines to form lines and culling selected line in the combined subimage. This process is repeated by combining further subimages and processing until substantially all of the image has been processed to provide the plurality of strand lines defining strand edges and then determining the orientation of the strand lines relative to the axis.
Abstract:
Downhole measurements are made for accurately determining whether or not a core barrel contains an appropriate amount of core sample before retrieval of the coring tool is attempted. This is accomplished by using a known apparatus for measuring downhole weight on bit (WOB) at the beginning of a coring run to make a first measurement corresponding to the weight of all drillstring components suspended below the measurement point at a selected depth. Thereafter, the coring tool drills down the length of the core barrel. When sufficient drilling takes place to obtain a core, the drillstring is pulled up to the same depth as the measurement and a second measurement is taken. After correcting the data for temperature changes, the difference in between the first and second measurements is obtained and compared to a calculated weight for a full core. If the difference in measurements is less than the calculated full core weight, then it is known that a full core has not been obtained and the coring operation is continued. However, if the difference in the measurements does correspond to the calculated weight of a full core barrel, then the drillstring is retrieved and the acquired core sample is obtained.

Microwave energy applied to a wood-resin composition such as plywood is used to cure the resin in a very short time, as compared with a conventional hot press process, and yet avoids the arcing and tracking problem that results when R.F. dielectric heating is used to reduce cure time. Pressure is applied to the plywood or other article being made either simultaneously with the microwave energy or shortly after the lather has been applied.
