    摘要: A method and system for determining a position of an orbiting transceiver in a communications network includes at least a first and second transceiver at a first and second known location, respectively, on Earth. The first and second transceivers are adapted to transmit and receive communications signals to and from the orbiting transceiver. A processor coupled to one of the first and second transceivers determines a first and second range measurement between each of the first and second transceivers and the orbiting transceiver, respectively, as well as corresponding first and second range rates representative of a time rate of change of the first and second range measurements. The processor then determines a circle of intersection representative of the set of possible positions for the orbiting transceiver based on the first range measurement and the first range rate wherein the circle of intersection includes a specific orientation in space, a specific radius and a center in a specific, three-dimensional position relative to the known position of the first transceiver. An angular position of the orbiting transceiver is then determined along the circle of intersection based on the known position of the second transceiver and the second range measurement. Finally, the position of the orbiting transceiver is determined based on the circle of intersection and the angular position.

    摘要: A method and system for maximizing satellite coverage at predetermined local times for a set of predetermined geographic location includes a processor operative to determine a period of rotation for each of the desired satellites in the satellite constellation. The processor also determines a time dependent coverage of the satellite constellation based on the period of rotation and the trajectory of each of the desired satellites. The trajectories of the desired satellites are tilted until the satellite constellation provides maximum coverage at the predetermined local times for the set of predetermined geographic locations. If a new satellite constellation is being designed, command signals are programmed into a computer of a launch vehicle containing the modified trajectory. If an existing satellite constellation is being modified, the ground station transmits command signals to the satellites for modifying the trajectory of the satellites in accordance with the tilted trajectory.

    摘要: A technique for near-field tomographic imaging using a multiple-receiver correlating interferometer. A target object or scene to be imaged is located in a near-field or Fresnel region of a receiver system. The target object radiates or reflects a signal that is sensed by a plurality of antennas. The received signals are correlated using conventional correlation algorithms. An image pixel for a focal point is then computed by correcting a differential time delay between a signal emitted at the focal point and received at first and second antennas. The system is focused on the target object by correcting a phase term of the correlation algorithms. The phase term is corrected by multiplying the correlation algorithms by a phase factor. A peak correlated value is developed when the focal point is at the target object location. A series of snapshots is generated from data produced by the focussing process, as the focal point is moved through the scene. The snapshots are successively superimposed, using tomographic techniques, to form a high resolution image map. The system achieves extremely high resolutions, rivalling those of synthetic aperture radar.

A local user signal is processed by the central processing hub and radiated through multiple paths to a plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms simultaneously. The signal is then re-radiated by each of the plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms to a mobile terminal that receives the re-radiated signal from the plurality of the plurality of individual transponding platforms coherently and in phase. The number of transponders and codes used to transmit each user signal can be readily adapted to user requirements. Additionally, each user is assigned a profit value by the central processing hub depending upon certain user characteristics. The assigned user profit value allows the total system utility/profitability to be maximized.

    摘要: A mobile wireless communications system including a plurality of individual transponding platforms all in communication with a central processing hub. A signal processed by the central processing hub is radiated simultaneously through multiple paths to a plurality of the individual transponding platforms. The signal transmitted to each transponding platform by the hub is appropriately delayed by the hub so as to equalize the differential delay of all such signals from a given receiver location. The radiated signal is then re-radiated by each of the plurality of individual transponding platforms to a mobile satellite terminal that receives the re-radiated signal from the plurality of individual transponding platforms. The signals from the plurality of transponding platforms are all received coherently by the intended user, and incoherently by all other users.

    摘要: A system and method for tracking a user. The system is adapted for use in a wireless communication system and creates a plurality of beams within a coverage area. A first beam is directed at a user in a first microcell and a number of additional beams illuminate microcells immediately adjacent the first microcell. The system is equipped with a mechanism for detecting movement of the user from the first microcell to one of the immediately adjacent microcells. On the detection of movement of the user, the system redirects the first beam from the first microcell to a second microcell, the second microcell being one of the adjacent microcells. In the illustrative embodiment, the system is implemented in a stratospheric platform based communication system including a hub adapted to communicate with a stratospheric platform. A transceiver and a phased array antenna are disposed on the platform to communicate with the hub and with the user. A second antenna is provided on the platform to communicate with the hub. Beamforming and direction are implemented on the hub and communicated to the platform. The user's position is detected with a global positioning system receiver, by measuring the strength of a signal received from the user, or by other suitable means. On detection of user movement from the first microcell, the beamforming system redirects the beam to follow the user into a second microcell. Additional beams around the user's microcell are illuminated to facilitate detection of the users movement.
