Abstract: A control system for a vehicle includes an electric drive system associated with a first set of wheels. The electric drive system is configured to selectively provide electric motive power to the first set of wheels to propel the vehicle and electric retarding to slow the vehicle. The system further includes a friction brake system associated with one of the first set of wheels or a second set of wheels, a drive system control unit, and a friction brake control unit in electrical communication with the drive system control unit. The drive system control unit is configured to communicate with the friction brake control unit to control an amount of friction brake application during vehicle stops and starts on grade.

Abstract: An energy management system comprises an energy management module that electrically connects an energy storage system of a vehicle with a traction link of the vehicle, the traction link being electrically connected to a traction motor. The energy management module is configured to deliver electrical power from the energy storage system to the traction link during a haul route, according to a discharge rule that is selected by a comparison of predicted performance of a plurality of discharge rules to a baseline performance of the haul route, in which electrical power is not delivered from the energy storage system to the traction link, in order to obtain fuel savings, speed excess, or a combination of fuel savings and speed excess relative to the baseline performance.
