    Abstract: An optical element for implementation in a heads-up display or other near-eye display system includes a lightguide and an incoupler optically coupled to the lightguide. The incoupler receives a display beam incident upon the lightguide at a first incidence position. The incoupler directs a first portion of the display beam into the lightguide to form an incoupled beam and causes a second portion to remain non-incoupled relative to the lightguide to form a non-incoupled beam. The optical element further includes a reflector to receive the non-incoupled beam and to reflect the non-incoupled beam towards the incoupler to form a reflected beam incident upon the incoupler at a second incidence position. The incoupler direct a corresponding portion of the reflected beam into the lightguide to form a further incoupled beam.

    Abstract: An optical engine of a display system includes first and second sets of laser light sources, which may be independently controllable, with laser light from each set of laser light sources being respectively combined to form first and second elliptical laser light beams. The first and second elliptical laser light beams may propagate along parallel or angularly separated optical paths prior to incidence at a scan mirror of an optical scanner of the system. In some embodiments, the first and second elliptical laser light beams are incident on separate regions of the reflective surface of the scan mirror. In some embodiments, the first and second elliptical laser light beams are incident on partially overlapping regions of the reflective surface of the scan mirror.

    Abstract: A display system employs multiple micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirrors in series to receive collimated light and direct the light to provide light having input angles corresponding to a desired field of view at a point or line at an incoupler (IC) of a waveguide without an optical relay. An initial one or more MEMS mirrors accepts collimated light and generates the scan angles. A last MEMS mirror in the series scans at a range of angles proportional to the scan angles generated by the initial MEMS mirror(s) and directs the scanned light back to a spot or a line at the IC.

    Abstract: Display systems, such as near eye display systems or wearable heads up displays, may include a laser projection system having an optical engine and an optical scanner. Light output by the optical engine may be directed into the optical scanner as two angularly separated laser light beams. The angularly separated laser light beams typically have different angles of incidence on a second scan mirror of the optical scanner. Respectively different levels of magnification are applied to the beam diameter of each of the angularly separated laser light beams in a first dimension, such that the angularly separated laser light beams have respectively different beam diameters upon incidence at the second scan mirror. In some embodiments, the different beam diameters of the angularly separated laser light beams result in regions of incidence of each of the angularly separated laser light beams on the second scan mirror being equal or substantially similar.

    Abstract: Systems and methods related to optical engines and laser projectors usable in wearable heads-up displays are described. An optical engine may include laser diodes that are configured to output laser light beams and that are disposed in a fully or partially hermetically sealed, encapsulated package having an exit window. A holographic or surface-relief diffraction grating may be integrated with or disposed on a primary output surface of the exit window of an enclosure of the optical engine. The diffraction grating may be configured to redirect a portion of the laser light toward one or more photodetectors disposed at or across from one or more surfaces of the exit window that are not parallel with the primary output surface. The primary output surface of the exit window may be slanted to be non-orthogonal to the primary direction of propagation of the emitted laser light.

    Abstract: Systems and methods to reduce light loss from a waveguide. The system includes a waveguide having an incoupler to direct light into the waveguide and a laser projector having laser diodes mounted to a substrate. The laser projector is configured to provide a plurality of laser light beams to the incoupler of the waveguide. The system further includes at least one alignment component configured to align the plurality of laser light beams tangent with an edge of the incoupler to minimize light lost from the waveguide through contact with the incoupler more than once.
