    Abstract: Systems and methods related to optical engines and laser projectors usable in wearable heads-up displays are described. An optical engine may include laser diodes that are configured to output laser light beams and that are disposed in a fully or partially hermetically sealed, encapsulated package having an exit window. A holographic or surface-relief diffraction grating may be integrated with or disposed on a primary output surface of the exit window of an enclosure of the optical engine. The diffraction grating may be configured to redirect a portion of the laser light toward one or more photodetectors disposed at or across from one or more surfaces of the exit window that are not parallel with the primary output surface. The primary output surface of the exit window may be slanted to be non-orthogonal to the primary direction of propagation of the emitted laser light.

    Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for directing display light employ one or more optical combiners that include recycle optics such as diffraction gratings, which can receive wasted display light travelling in a volume of an optical combiner, and redirect the wasted display light towards other optics so the wasted display light may be effectively used to produce a display. The optical combiners may also include a uniformization optic which can redistribute non-uniform display light, to produce a more uniform display, which in turn enables higher efficiency optics to be used.

    Abstract: There is provided a method of operating a wearable heads-up display, which display includes a light source, a light guide, and an incoupler carried by the light guide. The method includes emitting first and second beams having first and second wavelengths respectively, directing the first and second beams towards the incoupler, and directing, by the incoupler, at least a portion of the first and second beams into the light guide. Moreover the method includes internally reflecting, by the light guide, the portions of the first and second beams to form first and second reflected beams respectively. The first and second beams respectively may have first and second incoupling losses. Furthermore, the method includes adjusting a beam characteristic of at least one of the first and second beams to control a difference between their respective incoupling losses.

    Abstract: A head-mounted display (HMD) system includes a micro-display configured to project light beams, each of light beams encompassing a range of wavelengths different from each of the other light beams, and a waveguide having multiple incouplers configured to receive and direct light into the waveguide. Each of the incouplers is a diffraction grating with a fill factor different from each of the other incouplers. In some embodiments, each of the incouplers has a different period value from each of the other incouplers and the period value of each of the incouplers is based on the range of wavelengths of light each of the incouplers is configured to receive.

    Abstract: Systems and methods to reduce light loss from a waveguide. The system includes a waveguide having an incoupler to direct light into the waveguide and a laser projector having laser diodes mounted to a substrate. The laser projector is configured to provide a plurality of laser light beams to the incoupler of the waveguide. The system further includes at least one alignment component configured to align the plurality of laser light beams tangent with an edge of the incoupler to minimize light lost from the waveguide through contact with the incoupler more than once.

    Abstract: A lightguide formed from a single substrate includes a substrate and a plurality of reflective structures disposed on the substrate. These reflective structures form one or more incouplers, exit pupil expanders, and outcouplers of the lightguide and are each configured to reflect light representative of an image. The lightguide also includes an effectively transparent overmold material disposed over the reflective structures that, together with at least a portion of the substrate, forms a first surface of the substrate. Further, the lightguide includes a second surface formed by removing at least a portion of the substrate via a material removal operation.
