Abstract: An air cycle machine includes a housing, a scavenging turbine, and an ambient air fan. The housing has an exterior wall defining an overboard air inlet, an ambient air inlet, and an ambient air outlet. The scavenging turbine is arranged within the housing, is supported for rotation about a rotation axis, and is in fluid communication with the overboard air inlet. The ambient air fan is arranged within the housing, is supported for rotation about the rotation axis within the housing, and has a radially inner spoked portion and radially outer bladed portion. The bladed portion of the ambient air fan fluidly couples the ambient air inlet to the ambient air outlet and the spoked portion of the ambient air fan fluidly couples the scavenging turbine to the ambient air fan within the housing. Environmental control systems and fluid communication methods are also described.

Abstract: A fan rotor for a ram air fan includes a hub and blades extending radially outwards from the hub. The hub includes an inner hub portion, a disk portion connected to a radially outer surface of the inner hub portion, and an outer hub portion connected to a radially outer surface of the disk portion. The outer hub portion has an upstream arm with a compound contoured surface. The compound contoured surface is configured to direct air flow around the compound contoured surface and along roots of the blades.

Abstract: An embodiment of an electric motor assembly includes a stator assembly extending generally along the longitudinal axis and at least partially enclosing a rotor assembly also extending along the longitudinal axis. The rotor assembly includes a rotating portion and one or more sets of rotor windings. The stator assembly includes a stationary housing having at least an inner wall and an outer wall, and one or more sets of stator windings in electromagnetic communication with the one or more sets of rotor windings. A heat exchanger is integrally formed into the housing, and includes a plurality of dividing walls extending between the inner and outer housing walls. The plurality of dividing walls are arranged at least partially circumferentially around the longitudinal axis to define, with the inner and outer walls, a corresponding plurality of integral heat exchanger channels arranged at least partially circumferentially around the one or more sets of stator windings. A plurality of rib turbulators are disposed on at least a channel-facing surface of the inner wall.

Abstract: A heat exchanger assembly includes a plurality of first and second fluid passages defined by a pair of opposing first fluid passage walls and a plurality of first fluid diverters disposed between the first fluid passages walls. The second fluid passages are defined by a pair of opposing second fluid passage walls and a plurality of second fluid diverters disposed between the second fluid passage walls. An ejector is integrated into the heat exchanger assembly. The ejector includes: an integral ejector passage, wherein the integral ejector passage is a first fluid passage; a primary inlet configured to receive a hot fluid; an outlet nozzle configured to eject the hot fluid; a secondary inlet configured to receive a cold fluid, wherein the secondary inlet is in fluid communication with a second fluid passage; and a mixing section in fluid communication with the outlet nozzle and the secondary inlet.

The ambient air fan is supported for rotation within the housing and is operably associated with the scavenging turbine. The interior wall defines therethrough a turbine-fan port that fluidly couples the ambient air fan to the scavenging turbine for communication of an overboard air flow to an ambient air flow without external ducting. Environmental control systems and methods of flowing fluid through air cycle machines are also described.
