In a radio communication system, a beam is formed between subscriber stations and a base station which has an antenna device with several antenna elements. The antenna elements emit a downlink signal based on respective weighing with coefficients of a weighting vector. A plurality of weighting vectors are determined at the subscriber station in an initialization phase and transmitted to the base station. In a subsequent working phase, the subscriber station selects a dominant weighting vector from the weighting vectors and transmits a designation of the selected weighting vector to the base station.

A wireless receiver detects signals generated with a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter. The receiver applies maximum-likelihood detection (MLD) for soft-output signal detection, where an MLD exhaustive search across all candidate vectors is performed recursively by computing and accumulating the differences between, for example, the Euclidean metrics of consecutive candidate tests. Difference terms used for the accumulation are also calculated recursively. An ordering of candidates, such as by a triangular-waveform shaped ordering, is employed such that only one candidate variable is changed between any two consecutive candidate evaluations, leading to a reduced set of computations.

Maximum likelihood detection of signals in a MIMO receiver. A system transformation is obtained by selecting a weighting matrix that when linearly transforming a channel utilized for wireless communication, results in a particular transformed triangular matrix. The weighting matrix is then used to provide a transformed vector for a received signal that allows a search in one constellation. In searching the constellation recursion values are used to calculate the Euclidean distances between set points of the constellation and the location on the constellation corresponding to the received signal for both bit values 0 and 1. Minimum Euclidean distances are determined for bit values 0 and 1 and the difference of the minimum Euclidean distances is used to compute the maximum likelihood value for bits contained in the received signal.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for transmitting symbols in a multiple antenna communication system. The disclosed frame structure comprises a preamble having a plurality of long training symbols that are transmitted on a plurality transmit antennas. At least a portion of the frame is delayed on at least one transmit antenna. The disclosed frame formats of the present invention are backwards compatible to existing single antenna communication systems. The delay amount, D, can be approximately equal to one OFDM time sample period, T. The delayed version can be obtained by introducing a time delay into a signal on the delayed branch(es) or by cyclically shifting at least a portion of each frame on the delayed branch(es). The entire frame or only the preamble portion of each frame can be delayed.

Methods and systems to calibrating a transmitter for I/Q imbalance and local oscillator feed-through include generating a test tone, frequency up-converting the test tone, monitoring one or more features of the up-converted test tone, and adjusting one or more features of the transmitter in response to the monitoring. The monitoring optionally includes monitoring a beating of the envelope of the up-converted test tone. In an embodiment, a first harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for local oscillator feed-through (LOFT). Alternatively, baseband data inputs to the transmitter are disabled, and LOFT is measured by measuring power at the transmitter output. A second harmonic of the up-converted test tone is monitored for gain and phase imbalances. The adjusting optionally includes adjusting a gain imbalance, adjusting a phase imbalance, and/or adjusting DC offsets. The adjusting optionally includes an iterative refinement process. Such a refinement process optionally includes performing a first monitoring, applying a set of relatively coarse settings to the one or more features in the transmitter, monitoring the beating resulting from each of the coarse settings, selecting the coarse setting corresponding the smallest beating, applying a set of relatively fine settings centered around the selected coarse setting, wherein the fine settings are more closely related to one another than are the coarse settings, monitoring the beating resulting from each of the fine settings, and selecting the fine setting corresponding the smallest beating.
