Abstract:
Presently described are retroreflective articles, such as pavement markings, that comprise transparent microspheres partially embedded in a (e.g., polymeric) binder. Also described are (e.g., glass-ceramic) microspheres, methods of making microspheres, as well as compositions of glass materials and compositions of glass-ceramic materials. The microspheres generally comprise lanthanide series oxide(s), titanium oxide (TiO2), and optionally zirconium oxide (ZrO2).
Abstract:
A process for producing a tungsten oxide precursor solution that includes converting a peroxypolytungstate solution to a stable oxide polytungstate solution. The precursor solution may subsequently be transformed to tungsten oxide having electrochromic properties.
Abstract:
Encapsulated retroreflective element comprising a retroreflective assembly made up of a transparent optical body and a reflective member and essentially completely encapsulated within a dense, substantially transparent oxide coating. Also a method for making such retroreflective elements and articles and compositions comprising such retroreflective elements.
Abstract:
Encapsulated electroluminescent phosphor particles and method for making same. The phosphor particles are encapsulated in a very thin oxide layer to protect them from aging due to moisture intrusion. The particles are encapsulated via a vapor phase hydrolysis reaction of oxide precursor materials at a temperature of between about 25.degree. C. and about 170.degree. C., preferably between about 100.degree. C. and about 150.degree. C. The resultant encapsulated particles exhibit a surprising combination of high initial luminescent brightness and high resistance to humidity-accelerated brightness decay.
Abstract:
Shaped articles of superconducting YBa.sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.7 are made by a sol-gel process from a sol that is a mixture of an aqueous solution of barium hydroxide, a compatible aqueous solution of copper carboxylate, and at least one of a compatible aqueous solution of yttrium carboxylate and an aqueous suspension of colloidal oxide of yttrium. The sol has a Y:Ba:Cu molar ratio of approximately 1:2:3. After adjusting the concentration of the sol, it is formed into a shaped article which is dried and then fired to convert it into orthorhombic superconducting YBa.sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.7.
Abstract:
An uncolored roofing granule including a low solar absorption base and a low solar absorption and solar opaque coating presented on the base, the coating including a binder, a pigment, wherein the binder includes a curable component and a non-clay, thermally reactive curing agent.
Abstract:
There is provided hollow microspheres comprising: at least 45 wt % of recycled glass based on the total weight of a feed composition from which the hollow microspheres are derived, wherein the hollow microspheres have a density of less than 1.25 g/cm3, strength at 20% volume reduction greater than 20 MPa and have a substantially single cell structure. There is also provided hollow microspheres comprising: a blend of recycled glass and glass feed, wherein the hollow microspheres have a density of less than 1.25 g/cm3 and are made from a feed composition that is essentially free of an added effective blowing agent. There is provided a method for making hollow microspheres.
