The magnetic layer has an average thickness d of 0.01 to 0.3 &mgr;m, a ratio &sgr;/d of a standard deviation &sgr; in the thickness of the magnetic layer to the average thickness d equal to or less than 0.5, and, according to the roughness spectrum of a magnetic layer surface measured with an atomic force microscope, a PSD of 0.5 nm2 or lower in a wavelength of 1 to 5 &mgr;m and a PSD of 0.02 to 0.5 nm2 in a wavelength of 0.5 &mgr;m or more to less than 1 &mgr;m.

A magnetic recording medium is disclosed which includes a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic metal particles containing Al in an amount of 0.5 to 6% by weight per the total weight of metal components contained in the ferromagnetic metal particles, the ferromagnetic metal particles having the surfaces thereof coated with a compound or compounds of formula (1) or (2), as described herein. The magnetic recording medium has reduced abrasion with respect to magnetic heads and does not cause magnetic head fouling even under low humidity conditions.

In the method for producing a magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic substrate coated with a magnetic coating material containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder, the magnetic coating material contains a liquid A constituted by the ferromagnetic powder and a solvent, and a solution B of the binder, and the liquid A and the solution B are mixed together by a thin-layer revolving-type fast stirring apparatus, and are thereafter subjected to dispersion processing. Thereby, coagulated particles of the ferromagnetic powder can be dispersed and the coagulation of the ferromagnetic powder can be prevented, thus making it possible to obtain a liquid of ferromagnetic powder with uniform adsorption of the binder. As a result, a magnetic coating material suitable for a low-noise high-density coating-type magnetic recording medium is obtained.

The magnetic coating includes: a magnetic liquid containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder, and an abrasive liquid containing an abrasive and a solvent. The abrasive liquid may further contain the binder. The magnetic liquid and the abrasive liquid are each separately subjected to dispersion treatment, then the abrasive liquid is filtered, and then the magnetic liquid and the abrasive liquid are mixed. The obtained magnetic recording medium has a smooth magnetic layer surface, good electromagnetic conversion properties and excellent running durability and shows little wear of a head.
