    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of preparing a high hydrophobic silica aerogel having a high specific surface area and a low tap density, and a hydrophobic silica aerogel prepared thereby. The method of preparing a hydrophobic silica aerogel according to the present invention may have good productivity and economic efficiency, because preparation time is reduced by simultaneously performing surface modification, gelation, and solvent substitution in a single step, and may control a degree of hydrophobicity of the prepared silica aerogel by controlling a surface modification reaction by including a step of adding ammonium hydroxide. Thus, the preparation method according to the present invention and the hydrophobic silica aerogel are suitable for industries that need the method and the hydrophobic silica aerogel, particularly, industries that need a silica aerogel having high hydrophobicity or industries that need a silica aerogel having various degrees of hydrophobicity.

    Abstract: Provided are a method of preparing a metal oxide-silica composite aerogel, and a metal oxide-silica composite aerogel having an excellent weight reduction property prepared by the method. The method includes a step of adding an acid catalyst to a first water glass solution to prepare an acidic water glass solution (step 1); a step of adding a metal ion solution to the acidic water glass solution to prepare a precursor solution (step 2); and a step of adding a second water glass solution to the precursor solution and performing a gelation reaction (step 3) to yield a metal oxide-silica composite wet gel, wherein, in steps 2 and 3, bubbling of an inert gas is performed during the adding of the metal ion solution or the second water glass solution, respectively.

The present invention provides a two-step process of a nucleation step of forming silica colloid particles by using a low-concentration silica precursor and a growth step of further adding a relatively high-concentration silica precursor to form a silica wet gel by using the silica colloid particles as a seed. Thus, the present invention provides a method for producing a silica aerogel of which mechanical stability is improved to enhance pore characteristics, and physical properties are readily controllable, and also provides a silica aerogel produced thereby.

More specifically, a first water glass solution is used to form a first silica wet gel, and then a second water glass solution is additionally added to form a second silica wet gel organically bonded to the first silica wet gel which serves as a basic skeleton, so that a silica aerogel with enhanced physical properties is formed to increase the resistance to shrinkage in ambient drying, and the concentration of silicon dioxide in each of the first and second water glass solutions is controlled, thereby providing a method for producing a silica aerogel by which a silica aerogel having a specific tap density and controllable density can be produced, and also providing a silicon aerogel produced by the method.

The apparatus of manufacturing the aerogel sheet includes: a tray device in which a fiber sheet is accommodated; a rotation device including a rotation rod to which the tray device is fixed and a driving member rotating the rotation rod so that the tray device is disposed on an upper and lower portion of the rotation rod; an injection device injecting a silica precursor into the tray device disposed on the upper portion of the rotation rod to impregnate the silica precursor into the fiber sheet; and a surface modification device injecting a coating solution into the tray device disposed on the lower portion of the rotation rod to modify a surface of the fiber sheet in which the silica precursor is impregnated.
