Abstract:
Apparatus is described for determining the optical quality of an optical element, the optical element having proximal and distal end portions. The apparatus also includes at least one non-polarizing beam splitter; at least one polarizing beam splitter; at least a first detector operatively associated with the at least one non-polarizing beam splitter; at least a second detector operatively associated with the at least one polarizing beam splitter. The apparatus includes a mechanism to transmit at least one beam of coherent light energy through the at least one non-polarizing beam splitter and through the at least one polarizing beam splitter, the beam being directed to the proximal and distal end portions of the optical element; the beam of coherent light energy that is reflected from the proximal end portion of the optical element is directed back through the at least one polarizing and the at least one non-polarizing beam splitters to the first detector; the beam that is reflected from the distal end portion of the optical element is directed back through the at least one polarized beam splitter to the second detector; and, the energy level detected by the first and the second detectors provides a measure of optical quality of the optical element.
Abstract:
An optical fiber tip attachment comprising: a body having an opening at a first end of the body, the opening configured to receive an optical fiber; and a cavity extending from the opening through at least a portion of the body, wherein the cavity is configured to orient a cross-sectional surface of the optical fiber, from which electromagnetic radiation is delivered, at an angle to an axis of the optical fiber tip attachment at the opening.
Abstract:
A device for insertion into a body lumen includes an operator unit which may be hand held by an operator. A cannula is operatively associated with the operator unit and the cannula includes two parallel lumens. At least one of two lumens terminates at its distal end before the distal end of the other lumen and wherein one of the two lumens is contained at most partially within the other lumen.
Abstract:
A device for selectively grasping and cutting tissue includes an outer tube having a longitudinal axis and an open proximal end and an open distal end; also an inner tube within the outer tube, the inner tube having a longitudinal axis and an open distal end and an open proximal end; as well as a cup-shaped cutting member mounted to the distal end of the outer tube, the cutting member being larger in diameter than the diameter of the outer tube, the cutting member including one or more cutting surfaces around the lip of the cup-shaped cutting member, the one or more cutting surfaces facing in a distal direction; also, a cylindrical cup-shaped cutting member mounted to the distal end of the inner tube; the cutting member including one or more cutting surfaces mounted around the lip of the cylindrical cup-shaped cutting member facing in a proximal direction; and, the inner tube is of a diameter to be slidably movable within the outer tube; whereby moving the inner tube alternately in distal and proximal directions along the longitudinal axis causes the one or more cutting surfaces of the inner tube to approach and distance themselves from the one or more cutting surfaces of the outer tube, and, whereby tissue situated between the inner tube and the outer tube is grasped and cut.

Abstract:
A method of treating a mobile target tissue with a laser beam includes: providing a laser device for generating a laser beam and providing an optical fiber having a delivery end for guiding the laser beam to the target tissue; a controller causes the laser device to generate one or more laser pulses substantially along the same longitudinal axis. The controller causes the laser device to provide one or more laser pulses. The one or more pulses are selected to allow a vapor bubble formed by the one or more pulse to expand an amount sufficient to displace a substantial portion of the liquid medium from the space between the delivery end of the fiber and the target tissue. The one or more pulses are delivered to the target tissue through the vapor bubble after the vapor bubble has reached its maximum extent and has begun to collapse to reduce retropulsion of the mobile target tissue.

Abstract:
A method of optimizing the irradiation of a target with laser radiation includes selecting and mounting on a laser radiation delivery device either a waveguide or optical fiber type to be used; also, selecting at least the following parameters: selecting the total energy of the at least one train of pulses to be delivered to the target, and selecting the distance from the distal delivery end to the target; then, initiating irradiation of the target for the at least one train of pulses by generating a first laser pulse with sufficient energy (Ei) to form a vapor bubble in a liquid medium; allowing the vapor bubble formed to expand an amount sufficient to displace a substantial portion of the liquid medium from the space between the distal delivery end and the target; and, thereafter, after the selected time delay (Td) sufficient for the formed vapor bubble to reach its optimum extent, generating a second laser pulse (Ep), the second laser pulse being delivered to the target through the formed vapor bubble.
