A self-propelled continuous mining machine includes a mobile frame assembly having a front end portion with a boom assembly pivotally retained thereon. A dust collecting system is positioned on the mobile frame assembly for inducing a flow of air through a hollow interior portion of the boom assembly. As a dislodging head removes material from a mine face, the dust collecting system draws airborne dust created by the dislodging head through a hollow interior of the boom assembly and into the collecting system mounted on the mobile frame assembly. Two portions of the boom assembly are pivotally connected to portions of the collecting system mounted on the mobile frame assembly to provide pivoting joints to allow the collecting system to draw airborne dust through the boom assembly with the boom assembly in any preselected position relative to the mobile frame assembly. Twin ducts of the collecting system meet the boom on each side of the mining machine and the ducts of the collecting system extend rearwardly along each side of the mobile frame assembly. A conveying system mounted on the mobile frame assembly receives material from the dislodging head and transports the material rearwardly of the machine. One of the twin ducts crosses to the other side of the mobile frame by passing between the conveying reach and the return reach of the conveying system and joins with the other duct so that a single fan may be used to draw airborne dust through the system.

The roof bolting apparatus is supported by a drill pit which is positioned within the frame and movable relative to the frame. The roof bolting apparatus is arranged to install roof bolts at predetermined locations above the mining machine while the mining machine is being propelled through the mine to dislodge material from the mine face.

A cylindrical drum member is rotatably mounted on front of the boom member and includes a cylindrical intermediate section and a pair of end sections extending outwardly from the intermediate section. Cutting elements for dislodging material from a mine face extend from the respective drum sections. The cutting elements of the end sections are spaced from the adjacent cutting elements of the intermediate section by a pair of openings separating the intermediate section from the end sections respectively. A pair of nonrotatable housing assemblies extending forwardly from the boom member extend around the pair of openings. Each housing assembly has a tubular portion through which input shafts extend to transmit rotation to each of the end sections and therefrom by shafts extending from the end sections to the intermediate section to rotate the intermediate section. Each housing assembly has a body portion extending around the respective opening between the drum member sections and includes an outwardly projecting portion provided with tapered sidewalls that terminate in an edge portion. The housing tapered edge portions are operable to dislodge material from the mine face in front of the pair of openings between the end sections and the intermediate section so that a kerf is cut from the mine face extending along the entire length of the drum member.

Cutting elements extend from the surface of the respective drum sections and provide a continuous cutting pattern along the entire length of the drum member. Input drive shafts extend through rear openings between the adjacent ends of the intermediate section and the end sections. Rotation is transmitted from the input drive shafts through meshing bevel gears and planetary gears to rotate the intermediate section. The adjacent ends of the intermediate section and end sections include meshing gear teeth secured to the external surface of the sections so that the canted end sections are driven by the external meshing gear teeth. Passageways formed between the gear teeth on the external cylindrical surfaces of the drum sections facilitate the flow of dislodged material between the gear teeth to prevent material from accumulating between the teeth and thereby ensure positive drive to the canted end sections.

A boom mounted cutter drum assembly of a continuous mining machine includes a center drum section, a pair of intermediate drum sections, and a pair of end drum sections. Spray nozzles on the cutting elements of the cutter drum assembly phasingly direct liquid spray at the mine face as mine material is dislodged to suppress dust and frictional ignition. Liquid for the spray nozzles is supplied on the mining machine through stationary annular housings positioned between the intermediate drum sections and the end drum sections. Water is conveyed through passageways in the annular housings to corresponding passageways in a sealing and valving assembly located in the end drum sections having stationary and rotating components. The gear case is surrounded on one side by a cat seal and on the other side by a lip seal to prevent liquid leakage from flowing into the gear case. Also, a leakage passageway is provided in communication with the passageways in the seal and valving assembly to permit liquid leakage to flow to atmosphere. The passageways in the sealing and valving assembly phasingly communicate with axial liquid passageways. The axial liquid passageways lead through the end drum section and into various zones in the end drum sections, the intermediate drum sections, and the center drum section to phasingly supply liquid to the spray nozzles located on the cutting elements as they dislodge material from the mine face.

A self-propelled boring type mining machine includes a mobile frame and a pair of spaced apart rotor drive shafts extending forwardly from the mobile frame. Rotary cutter arms are nonrotatably connected to the rotor drive shafts for cutting a pair of overlapping bores in a mine face to dislodge solid material. Cusps formed at the mine roof and floor are dislodged by upper and lower cutter drum assemblies pivotally mounted transversely on the frame front end portion. The lower cutter drum assembly includes an intermediate drum section separated by gaps from a pair of end drum sections. Gear cases extend into the gaps to rotatably support a transverse drive shaft that is drivingly connected to the intermediate and end drum sections. The centerlines of the gear cases are spaced inboard of the centerlines of the rotor drive shafts. The end drum sections are helically splined to the drive shaft so that upon rotation of the drive shaft, the end drum sections rotate and advance longitudinally on the drive shaft between a retracted position and an extended position to control the width of cut in the mine face. By positioning the gear cases inboard of the rotor drive shafts when the end drum sections are extended the area left uncut between the cutting paths of the rotary cutter arms and end drum sections is minimized.

A cutting tool assembly adapted for mounting on a driving mechanism of a mining machine to dislodge solid material in mining operations includes a base member rigidly secured as by welding to the driving mechanism. A cutter member having an elongated shank and a conical head is releasably positioned in a bore through the base member. The conical head extends from the upper end of the shank and supports a hard cutting tip that is operable to dislodge solid material from a mine face upon rotation of the driving mechanism. The shank has a tapered body positioned in a tapered portion of the base member bore. The surface of the tapered body cooperates with the bore tapered portion to form a locking fit of the shank in the base member substantially free of relative movement between the shank and the base member to prevent wear of the base member bore. A securing device engages the lower end of the shank to exert a downward force on the shank and urge the complementary surfaces of the shank and the base member into wedging engagement within the bore. Wear of the base member bore is thus substantially prevented resulting in an extended operating life of the base member and reduced downtime for replacing a worn base member.
