To this end, a serving base station currently-connected to the radio communication apparatus and a target base station to be connected after a handoff periodically or non-periodically measure uplink/downlink channel states in relation to the radio communication apparatus, and the target base station allocates resources (e.g., time slot, specific subcarrier, or specific frequency band) most suitable for the service requested from the radio communication apparatus during a handoff, thereby preventing QoS degradation due to the handoff. In addition, in the case of a radio communication apparatus using multiple antennas, the serving base station notifies the target base station of a multi-antenna operation mode in relation to the radio communication apparatus before finishing a handoff procedure, thereby minimizing QoS degradation due to the handoff.

A system and method for switching a session of a User Equipment (UE) in a wireless communication system are provided. According to the method, if the UE performs a handover from a macro base station of a macro cell to a femto base station of a femto cell, a femto base station transmits a path switch request message, which includes a serving gateway relocation Information Element (IE), to a Mobility Management Entity (MME) of the macro cell, in order to request a switching from an existing session of the UE to a new session managed by the femto base station. Then, in response to the path switch request message, the MME switches the existing session of the UE to the new session and transmits a path switch approval message to the femto base station. The serving gateway relocation IE includes information requesting relocation of a serving gateway of the UE to a femto serving gateway within the femto cell.

A system is provided for performing location update in a wireless mobile communication system that uses an Internet protocol (IP) address and is classified as at least one paging group. A serving base station (BS) sends a message including an identifier of a paging group where the serving BS is located, determines whether there is a change in IP subnet of a mobile station (MS) upon receipt of a location update request from the MS, and upon recognizing a change in IP subnet of the MS, stores information on a new IP subnet and notifies the change in the IP subnet to the MS. Upon detecting a need for location update, the MS sends a request for location update to a serving BS, and receives a location update success notification and an allocated temporary IP address from the serving BS.
