Abstract: A cathode active material includes a lithium composite oxide having a crystal structure which belongs to a layered structure. The lithium composite oxide has a BET specific surface area of not less than 5 m2/g and not more than 10 m2/g. The lithium composite oxide has an average particle size of not less than 3 μm and not more than 30 μm. The lithium composite oxide, an average crystallite size calculated by an X-ray diffraction method is not less than 150 Å and not more than 350 Å.

The integrated intensity ratio I(18°-20°)/I(43°-46°) is a ratio of an integrated intensity I(18°-20°) to an integrated intensity I(43°-46°). The integrated intensity ratio I(63°-65°)/I(17°-19°) is a ratio of an integrated intensity I(63°-65°) to an integrated intensity I(17°-19°). The integrated intensity I(A°-B°) is an integrated intensity of a maximum peak present in a range of angle of diffraction 2θ greater than or equal to A° and less than or equal to B° in the X-ray diffraction pattern of the positive electrode active material.

Abstract: The disclosed secondary battery is a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery including a positive electrode and a negative electrode. The positive electrode includes a first layer containing a positive electrode active material, and the first layer further contains a flame retardant containing a halogen atom. The first layer can contain carbon nanotubes. The first layer may include a second layer and a third layer disposed nearer to a surface of the positive electrode than the second layer, a content of the flame retardant in the third layer being higher than that in the second layer.
