    摘要: Compression-distraction spinal fixation systems, and methods of performing compression-distraction spinal fixation, are provided that include screw-rod constructs having a ratcheting mechanism. Bone screws of the screw-rod constructs can have a pawl that engages ratchet teeth on the rod of the screw-rod construct. The bone screw can be unidirectionally ratcheted along the length of the rod to apply compressive or distractive forces. Tools for manipulation of the screw-rod constructs are also provided, which tools include distal tips configured to engage the bone screws.

    摘要: An intervertebral disc replacement prosthesis for placement between two adjacent vertebrae which comprises two bone cantacting members and an intermediate member with a cavity. A first bone contacting member has bone contacting surface for contacting and/or incorporating to a first vertebra and a bearing surface which substantially mates with the intermediate member. A second bone contacting member has a bone contacting surface for contacting and/or incorporating to a second vertebra, a bearing surface which substantially mates with the intermediate bearing member, and a flexible protrusion which substantially captures the intermediate bearing member and contacts and/or incorporates with the first vertebra. The flexible member may be in the form of a spring, flexible cable, or polymer.

    摘要: Ultra-compact concentrators and illuminators that approach the thermodynamic limit to optical performance can be realized with purely imaging strategies. Two-stage reflector systems where each optical surface is tailored to eliminate one order of aberration—so-called aplantic designs are described. The contours are monotonic functions that can be expressed analytically—important in facilitating optimization studies and practical fabrication. The radiative performance of the devices presented herein is competitive with, and even superior to, that of high-flux nonimaging systems. Sample results of practical value in solar concentration and light collimation are presented for systems that cover a wide range of numerical aperture.
