Abstract: A method for lightening skin tone is provided, comprising topically administering a personal care composition comprising: (A) voided latex particles comprising (i) a core polymer comprising (a) 20 to 60 weight % of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers containing a carboxylic acid group, and (b) 40 to 80 weight % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (ii) a shell polymer comprising (a) 55 to 85 weight % of non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and (b) 15 to 45 weight % of polyethylenically unsaturated monomers; (B) 0.1 to 10 weight % of pigment grade inorganic metal oxide particles having a particle size of 250 nm to 1,000 nm; (C) a dermatologically acceptable carrier; and (D) an emollient, wherein the voided latex particles are present in at 0.5 to 10 weight %, based on weight of the composition, contain a void and have a particle size of 400 nm to 1500 nm.

Abstract: An aqueous personal care rinse off composition is provided, comprising: a dermatologically acceptable aqueous vehicle; a dermatologically acceptable cleaning surfactant; and a plurality of composite opacifier particles, wherein the composite opacifier particles comprise metal oxide particles that are partially or completely encapsulated by a wax; wherein the metal oxide particles are selected from the group consisting of zinc oxide, titanium oxide and mixtures thereof; wherein the metal oxide particles have a z average particle size of >100 nm as measured by dynamic light scattering; wherein the wax has a melting point temperature of 50 to 110° C.; and wherein the composite opacifier particles have a z average particle size of >100 nm to 2,000 nm as measured by dynamic light scattering.

Abstract: A multistage colored polymer particle is provided, having a core comprising polymerized units of a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid core monomer and a non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated core monomer; an inner shell comprising polymerized units of a non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated inner shell monomer; a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid inner shell monomer; optionally, an aliphatic inner shell monomer; and, optionally, a first polymerizable dye monomer; an outer shell comprising polymerized units of a non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated outer shell monomer; a monoethylenically unsaturated non-carboxylic acid outer shell monomer; optionally, a second polymerizable dye monomer; and, optionally, an aliphatic outer shell monomer; wherein the core, when dry, contains at least one void; and wherein the multistage colored polymer particle comprises polymerized units of polymerizable dye monomer. Skin care formulations comprising multistage colored polymer particles and methods of using same are also provided.
