    Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of submicron-sized polymer particles and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the polymer particles or beads or both are functionalized with phosphorus acid groups. The composition of the present invention is useful for providing a matte finish on substrates, such as leather, textiles, wallboard, decorative coatings, concrete, and wood, with improved stain resistance. The present invention also relates to a leather substrate coated with a clear matte finish comprising an acrylic or styrene-acrylic polymer film and micron-sized polymer beads, wherein the film or the beads or both are functionalized with a phosphorus acid monomer.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl acetate polymer comprising the step of polymerizing vinyl acetate under emulsion polymerization conditions in the presence of a chain transfer agent which is a hypophosphite salt or X—R1—SH, where R1 is a C1-C4 alkyl group and X is sulfonate, hydroxyl, sulfate, phosphate, phosphonate, carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, or C1-C3-alkyl carboxylate. The process provides a way of lowering the viscosity of the vinyl acetate polymer at a given solids content.

    Abstract: Provided are multistage polymer compositions comprising (a) an initial stage polymer, and (b) a latter stage polymer, wherein latter stage polymer comprises polymerized units derived from at least one alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer, a styrene monomer, and at least one organo-phosphorus monomer. The at least one organo-phosphorus monomer is in the acid form as a salt of the phosphorus acid group. The weight ratio of the at least one alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer to styrene monomer in the latter stage polymer ranges from 50:50 to 90:10. Also provided are matrix resin compositions comprising such polymer compositions and a matrix resin, and a method for making the multistage polymer compositions.

    Abstract: Provided is a polymeric composition comprising a continuous phase that comprises a matrix polymer and a dispersed phase comprising polymer particles, wherein the polymer particles comprise:



    (a) 30% to 85% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particles, a core polymer having Tg of −35° C. or lower;
    (b) 15% to 50% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particles, an intermediate polymer having Tg that is 20° C. or lower and that is higher than the Tg of the core polymer by 10° C. or more; and
    (c) 5% to 30% by weight, based on the dry weight of the polymer particles, a shell polymer having Tg of 50° C. or higher;

    wherein the shell polymer comprises polymerized units of all vinyl aromatic monomers in an amount of 1% or less, by weight based on the weight of the shell polymer. Also provided is a method of making the composition.
