Polymer blend compositions comprising a polycarbonate, a graft copolymer and a rigid copolymer exhibit improved low-temperature impact properties. The polycarbonate has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, not less than 35,000 and the rigid copolymer has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, not less than 130,000. The graft copolymer is formed from at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers graft polymerized to a rubbery polymer substrate. The rigid copolymer is formed from at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers and is compatible with the graft copolymer.

Thermoplastic blend compositions comprise a polyphenylene ether resin, a polyamide resin and a compatibilizing agent present in an amount sufficient to effect compatibilization of the polyphenylene ether resin and the polyamide resin. The compatibilizing agent comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of tetracarboxylic acids of aromatic and alicyclic compounds and dianhydride derivatives thereof, and halogen substituted phthalic anyhydrides.

Compositions comprising a carboxylated PPE resin and a polyamide having good compatibility and impact properties. The carboxylated PPE resin/polyamide alloys are produced by a process wherein a mixture consisting essentially of the PPE resin and a minor amount of an unsaturated carboxylic compound are first melt processed, then compounded with the polyamide.
