Abstract: Systems and methods for drilling optimization of a subterranean well include securing a multifunction sub in line with a tubular string. A nozzle provides a fluid flow path from the central bore through a sidewall of the sub body, the nozzle oriented in a direction so that the fluid flow path directs a wellbore fluid from within the central bore in a direction uphole. A valve system can move between a closed position where the fluid flow path of the nozzle is closed, and at least one open position where the wellbore fluid can pass through the fluid flow path. A control system is operable to receive information and provide a signal to move the valve system. The tubular string is moved into a bore of the subterranean well and information is delivered to the control system to regulate the flow of wellbore fluid through the nozzle.

Abstract: A downhole tool for use within a wellbore extending into an underground formation includes a wellbore wall disengaging assembly having a tubular string defining a longitudinal axis, and a plurality of longitudinal blades forming a retractable sleeve around the tubular string, the retractable sleeve having a substantially contiguous inner profile in a closed position, and wherein the retractable sleeve is actuated based on an internal pressure in the tubular string proximate to the downhole tool. A method of disengaging a downhole tool from a wall of a wellbore extending into an underground formation includes lowering a wellbore wall disengaging assembly, the assembly comprising a tubular string defining a longitudinal axis, and a plurality of longitudinal blades forming a retractable sleeve around the tubular string, the retractable sleeve having a substantially contiguous inner profile in a closed position, and actuating the retractable sleeve.

Abstract: A drilling fluid system and associated method for supplying drilling mud to a drilling operation includes a plurality of first sensors associated with a first mud pit, configured to measure a plurality of properties of the drilling mud in the first mud pit, a plurality of second sensors associated with a second mud pit, configured to measure the plurality of properties of the drilling mud in the second mud pit, and a control unit configured to receive measurements from the plurality of first sensors and the plurality of second sensors, determine which of the mud pits comprises drilling mud with a desired plurality of properties, and cause to operate a first valve associated with the first mud pit or a second valve associated with the second mud pit for selecting drilling mud from the first mud pit or the second mud pit based on the determination.

Abstract: A downhole autonomous jet cutting tool includes a main body with a generally cylindrical configuration. The main body includes a locking unit actuable to engage the tool to an inner surface of the pipe, a hydraulic motor with a rotor and a stator, and a rotatable jet cutting nozzle assembly operable to emit a stream of fluid to cut the pipe. The tool also includes a sensor module to detect interactions between the pipe and walls of the wellbore and a control unit in electronic communication with the sensor module and the locking unit. The control unit can identify, based on output of the sensor module, a location where interaction between the pipe and the walls of the wellbore limits downhole movement of the pipe, actuate the locking unit to engage the tool in the inner surface of the pipe, and initiate the stream of fluid from the nozzle assembly.

Abstract: A junk recovery tool may include a longitudinal axial mandrel, a plurality of junk recovery baskets, and at least one junk recovery sensor. The plurality of junk recovery baskets may be spaced apart and attached to the longitudinal axial mandrel. A first one of the junk recovery baskets may be disposed uphole of a second one of the junk recovery baskets. Each of the junk recovery baskets may include a plurality of apertures, allowing a drilling fluid to pass through the junk recovery basket while collecting junk from the drilling fluid. The at least one junk recovery sensor may be disposed in one of the plurality of junk recovery baskets. The at least one junk recovery sensor may be operable to measure an amount of collected junk in the one of the plurality of junk recovery baskets. The present disclosure also includes systems and methods incorporating the junk recovery tool.

Abstract: An apparatus is positioned within a wellbore in a subterranean formation. The apparatus includes a housing, a guide shaft, a follower, multiple underreamer blades, and a hydraulic chamber. The housing defines a track including multiple catch points. The guide shaft is disposed within the housing. The follower protrudes radially outward form the guide shaft and is received by the track. The follower and the track are cooperatively configured to restrict movement of the guide shaft relative to the housing. A rate of flow to the guide shaft is adjusted to adjust a relative position of the guide shaft with respect to the housing until the follower is located at one of the catch points. A pressure within the hydraulic chamber is adjusted to adjust a level of radially outward protrusion of the underreamer blades. The underreamer blades are rotated to cut into the subterranean formation.

Abstract: A drilling assembly includes a drill string configured to be disposed within a wellbore. The drilling assembly also includes a sub fluidically coupled to the drill string. The sub includes a mandrel fixed to the drill string and defines an external helically undulated surface and a bore configured to flow drilling fluid received from the drill string. The sub includes a sleeve rotationally coupled to and disposed outside the mandrel. The sleeve has an internal helically undulated surface corresponding with the external helically undulated surface of the mandrel to form, with the mandrel, a progressive cavity. The progressive cavity receives fluid from the bore of the mandrel to rotate the sleeve as the drilling fluid flows along the cavity. The sub also includes a valve configured to regulate a flow of the drilling fluid along the bore to direct fluid toward or away from the progressive cavity.
