Abstract: Lubricating grease compositions are prepared by dispersing in a silicone, such as methyl phenyl silicone, a mixture of a complex of a bentonite clay and an aliphatic amine salt with a polar material, and heating the resulting dispersion to drive off the polar material. Aliphatic amine salts mentioned are octadecylamine, hydrochloride and dimethyldioctyldecylamine hydrochloride. Acetic acid may also be used as the salt-forming acid. Polar materials referred to are those having a positive dipole moment, such as isopropyl alcohol, acetone, ethyl ether and xylol. Carnauba wax may be added to the compositions. Specification 703,261 is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating grease compositions are prepared by dispersing in a lubricating oil a mixture of a complex of a bentonite clay and an aliphatic amine salt with a polar material, and heating the resulting dispersion to drive off the polar material. Abstract: Mineral lubricating oil is mixed with a soap selected from the group consisting of lithium soaps, mixtures of lithium and calcium soaps and mixtures of lithium and strontium soaps of unsaturated fatty acids, the mixture is heated to the melting point of the soap, or slightly above then cooled with agitation to the transition temperature, and the grease mixture is allowed to cool further without agitation. The total amount of soap may be preferably from 5 to 50 per cent. by weight based on the total composition. It is preferred that the unsaturated fatty acids have an iodine value of 75 or more. The greases are prepared by heating a mixture of the fatty acids with about a quarter of the mineral oil to about 150 DEG F. and then adding the lithium hydroxide, mixed if desired with calcium or strontium hydroxide, as a boiling water solution, or as a water slurry in the case of the mixed bases. The temperature is raised to 220 DEG F. and another quarter of the mineral oil added. The mixture is dehydrated at 220 DEG to 240 DEG F., then the remainder of the oil is added at about 300 DEG F. and the temperature is raised to the melting point of the soap or slightly above. The homogeneous mixture so obtained is cooled to the transition temperature with constant agitation such as milling and then cooled further to handling temperatures without agitation. In an example (all percentages by weight) 15.0 per cent. of cottonseed fatty acids and about a quarter of the total amount (82.25 per cent.) of mineral oil of viscosity S.U.S. 900 at 100 DEG F. and V.I. 45 are heated to 120 DEG F. and 0.85 per cent. of lime (68 per cent. CaO) added and cooked in. At about 170 DEG F., 1-90 per cent. of lithium hydroxide monohydrate is added as a boiling water solution and the temperature raised to 220 DEG F. A further quarter of the mineral oil is added to facilitate stirring and the mixture dehydrated at 220 DEG -240 DEG F. Further heating is applied and the remainder of the mineral oil is added at 300 DEG F. The temperature is raised to 320 DEG F. and held there until the soap curds melt to give a homogeneous fluid mixture. The grease was stirred while cooling and samples withdrawn at different temperatures for testing, the results being reported.
