Abstract: A brake crawler assembly configured for vertically moving an arm assembly along a pivot member in a multi-disk hard disk drive is provided. The brake crawler assembly includes a first clamp, including a first recess within which is disposed a first actuator and a first clamp calibration element. The first clamp calibration element includes a first clamp calibration access portion adapted to be accessible externally of the first clamp and adapted to receive a first external adjustment and a first clamp internal compression modifier adapted to modify a force exerted by the first actuator on the first recess, responsive to the received first external adjustment, wherein the first clamp is configured to selectively engage the pivot member at a position along the pivot member relative to at least one disk of the multi-disk hard disk drive based on the modified force exerted.

Abstract: A data storage device includes a base, a shaft that extends perpendicular from the base, and a head stack assembly (HSA) having a first end to which a head is coupled and a second end that is movably mounted on the shaft. The data storage device also includes either a first actuator assembly or a second actuator assembly. The first actuator assembly includes a first coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second coil-permanent magnet assembly that serves as a first elevator to linearly move the HSA along the shaft. The second actuator assembly includes a third coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second elevator that linearly moves the HSA along the shaft and also moves a data storage device ramp in unison with the HSA.

Abstract: A data storage blade includes a plurality of data storage cartridges, with each of the plurality of data storage cartridges comprising at least one data storage medium. The data storage blade also includes shared drive electronics (SDE) external to the plurality of data storage cartridges. The SDE is configured to control data access operations on different data storage cartridges of the plurality of data storage cartridges. The data storage blade further includes a controller-override mechanism activatable to disable communication between the SDE and the plurality of data storage cartridges.

Abstract: In one aspect, a data storage device includes a disc, an arm, a head, a linear driver, and an elevator. The disc has a read/write surface defining an x-y plane. The arm has a head end that is movable relative to the disc. The head is configured to interact with the read/write surface. The linear driver is configured to move the arm along a substantially straight line in the x-y plane. The elevator is configured to move the arm in a z direction. In another aspect, rather than a linear driver, the data storage device includes a rotary actuator and a pivot actuator. The arm includes a first portion and a load beam. The rotary actuator is configured to move the first portion about a first pivot axis; the pivot actuator is configured to move the load beam about a second pivot axis relative to the first portion.

Abstract: An issue facing shared read/write player hard disc drives (HDDs) is when a head-media contact event occurs, any resulting plume of debris caused by the contact event not only affects the magnetic disc currently being read or written, but other magnetic discs within the HDD enclosure. The presently disclosed technology is directed as mitigating the potential consequences of such a head-media contact event. By providing one or more internal access doors within the HDD, a magnetic disc currently being read from or written to may be physically isolated from other magnetic discs within the HDD. As a result, in the event of a head-media contact event, any resulting plume of debris caused by the contact event only affects the magnetic disc currently being read or written. The remaining magnetic discs within the HDD are isolated from the plume of debris.

Abstract: Reading data stored on an optical fiber medium includes receiving an optical fiber having data stored thereon in a light-affecting format, guiding the optical fiber through a readback guide system causing a length of the optical fiber to align with an axis, directing light through at least a portion of the optical fiber, the light producing an observable light dispersion pattern based on the light-affecting data stored on the optical fiber, observing the light dispersion pattern as a manner of reading the stored data of the optical fiber, determining the stored data based on the observing the light dispersion pattern, and outputting the determined stored data to a host.
