The force applied by loads (22, 23) to a force-measurement cell (31), mounted on a motorized slider (33) and moving parallel to said loads, is measured as a function of the displacement. A processing unit plots a graph depicting the force measured as a function of the displacement; any imperfection of the surface condition of the slides (22a, 23a) can be spotted on the graph. The movement-checking method and apparatus apply to the checking of any rectilinear movement of a guided object subjected to a constant force, and particularly to the checking of the state of wear of the slides of equipment for measuring the compressibility of articles produced in the tobacco industry.

An ejection system is provided which has a mechanism such as a plunger which is positioned to eject at least a portion of a cigarette from the lighter cavity upon actuation by a smoker. The plunger is also positionable to occlude the lighter opening to protect the lighter cavity from dust, moisture, etc. The plunger is shaped, located and arranged to apply a force on the cigarette end inserted into the lighter. Further, an icon based indicator informs the smoker of the status of a cigarette inserted into the lighter.

Strain gages are applied to opposite sides of the cantilever beam member of a short tongue in such locations that the strain gages exhibit stress changes of opposite sense on movement of the short tongue compression foot occasioned by a change in tobacco rod firmness. An existing short tongue is modified by provision of a reduced section in its cantilever beam for amplifying the signal output of a strain gage supported therein. Plural pairs of strain gages may be employed for further amplification of the signal indicating compression foot movement.

A method and an apparatus for controlling energy flow into a heating load array of a smoking article are provided. In response to a pressure drop in the mouthpiece of the smoking article, a selected load in the heating load array is switchably connected to a power supply. Energy delivered to the load is measured and the load is disconnected when a predetermined amount of energy has been delivered.
