There is provided an apparatus which can be incorporated into machines or production lines for the making of rod-shaped articles, such as filter cigarettes. The apparatus ascertains at least the diameters of longitudinally spaced-apart portions of an article, such as a continuous cigarette rod having equidistant portions of greater density, while the article advances lengthwise at a constant speed or at one of several different speeds. Accurate determination of the diameters of spaced-apart portions and, if necessary, a change of the diameter when it deviates from an optimum value, renders it possible to reduce the number of rejects and to turn out high-quality products, such as filter cigarettes wherein the mouthpiece is attached to the dense ends of the plain cigarettes; this ensures that the diameter of the dense end is identical with or sufficiently close to that of the filter mouthpiece so that the customary uniting band can secure the mouthpiece to the plain cigarette without leakage.

The inspection device includes a measuring circuit for continuously calculating the fill of the cut tobacco in each of a given number of divisions of each cigarette in accordance with a detection signal from a density sensor, an enrollment control section for repeatedly storing calculation data from the measuring circuit in a quantity corresponding to a predetermined number of cigarettes at a time, and a CPU for computing average calculation data for each division of each cigarette in accordance with the stored calculation data. The server computer originates quality data for the cigarettes in accordance with the average calculation data and displays the quality data on a CRT.

The invention relates to a tobacco content control device for use in a cigarette manufacturing machine, wherein shredded tobacco is fed by means of a hole-provided cigarette conveyor, is trimmed by a trimming means for regulating the amount of the shredded tobacco, and is then wrapped by a wrapping means, thereby producing stick-like cigarettes. The control device comprises a fist radiometric density detector for detecting the density of the shredded tobacco before the tobacco content is trimmed, a second radiometric density detector for detecting the density of the stick-like cigarettes, a feed forward control circuit, and a feed back control circuit. The feed forward control circuit includes a high pass filter for picking up only high-frequency components out of a first signal supplied from the first radiometric density detector, and a delay circuit for delaying the high-frequency components by a predetermined time. By use of these structural elements, the feed forward control circuit generates a feed forward control signal corresponding to an instantaneous variation in the first signal. The feed back control circuit includes an integrator for integrating a second signal supplied from the second radiometric density detector. By use of this structural element, the feed back control circuit generates a feed back control signal corresponding to an average variation in the second signal. The feed forward control signal and the feed back control signal are added together, on the basis of which the trimming means is controlled.

This invention relates to an automatic control device adapted to regulate, without interruptions, cigarette-making process and in a substantially continuous way, the cut tobacco being re-circulated back to the distributor, as trimmed excess tobacco (S) from the uniform tobacco rod, formed in the pneumatic suction belt forming assembly (N) of a continuous cigarette-making machine. Said device substantially comprises a detector suction head (1), through which all of said trimmed excess tobacco (S) is passed pneumatically, in its path of suction re-circulation, from trimmer (R) of the belt (N) the distributor of the cut tobacco for the formation of the rod. Said detector suction head (1) is associated with a photo-cell sensor (4, 5) whose light beam is liable to be attenuated by the total flow of trimmed cut tobacco (S) sucked through said head. Depending upon the intensity of said attenuation, said optical sensor (4, 5) generates a primary measurement and control signal indicating the specific output of said excess tobacco. Associated with the detector suction head (1), inserted in the sucking ducts (2, 3) from the trimmer (R) to the distributor, is a regulatable means for controlling the total flowrate of the distributor, adapted to control said flowrate as a function of said primary measurement signal indicating the recirculated excess tobacco (S) to said distributor.
