Abstract:
The present invention provides a crosslinkable waterborne coating composition useful for providing protective coating to wood and other substrates. The coating composition includes a vinyl addition latex polymer having a first crosslinkable functional group and a polyurethane dispersion having a second crosslinkable functional end group. The coating composition is preferably essentially formaldehyde free.
Abstract:
A veneered wood product is made using a multilayer finishing system wherein at least one of the subsurface layers comprises a UV cured cationically polymerized moiety. Coatings based on UV curable cationically polymerizable moieties appear to be less sensitive to UV overexposure and more adherent to wood fibers than corresponding coatings based on UV curable free radically polymerizable moieties. The multilayer wood veneer finishing system can provide improved intercoat adhesion or improved veneer check resistance, especially under factory conditions.
Abstract:
A thermosetting, one package, waterborne coating composition comprising a hydroxy functional polymer and a tris(alkoxycarbonylamino) is described. The coating composition can optionally include carboxyl-functional resin components and can be clear or pigmented. Preferred embodiments of the present coating compositions include one or more catalysts selected from Brönsted or Lewis acids, tertiary amine bases, ammonium salts of Lewis acids, organo-tin compounds or metal chelating agents.
Abstract:
An aqueous coating composition containing (i) a polymer having one or more acetoacetyl-functional groups; and (ii) an acid-functional polymer, which may be the same as or distinct from the polymer comprising acetoacetyl-functional groups, wherein a nitrogen-free base has been used to neutralize or partially neutralize the acid-functionality on the polymer.
Abstract:
Engineered wood product edges are protected by applying a two part edge sealing composition to at least one edge surface. The two part edge sealing composition can improve holdout, hide, and water resistance. An edge sealing system and substrates coated with the sealing system are provided.
Abstract:
Blooming may be reduced or eliminated in a low formaldehyde amino resin-crosslinkable coating composition by including in the composition, in addition to the ingredients necessary to form a crosslinked coating, an anti-blooming agent containing one or more of (i) an acid-functional polymer, (ii) ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or an ethylene glycol or propylene glycol polymer or copolymer, or (iii) for compositions containing the acidic catalyst p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA), a further acidic cure catalyst having greater hydrophobicity than PTSA. The anti-blooming agent has particular value in amino resin-crosslinkable alkyd resin formulations, but may be used in amino resin-crosslinkable coating compositions based on other film-forming polymers bearing amino resin-reactive functional groups including appropriately functionalized acrylic, polyester, vinyl and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) resins and nitrocellulose lacquers.
Abstract:
Soak-in and strike through on the exposed end grain portions of low density or porous wood substrates including alder, birch, pine, poplar, and soft maple are reduced by applying to the end grain a solvent-borne coating composition containing an (i) alkyd resin having a hydroxyl number less than about 150, (ii) acid catalyst and (iii) cross linker. The resin desirably has a number average molecular weight greater than about 2000, and may have a Gardner coloration less than about 3 or may be a short oil alkyd based on coconut oil. By using a reduced hydroxyl number alkyd resin, a reduced cross linker amount may be employed, thereby reducing formaldehyde evolution in compositions made with methylated amino resin cross linkers such as methylated melamine resins.
