A method and Mobile Subscriber Station (MSS) are provided for transmitting Channel Quality Information (CQI) in a wireless communication system using an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) scheme. A Carrier to Interference and Noise Ratio (CINR) of at least two bands are measured; each of the at least two bands including a plurality of adjacent subcarriers for a band Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) operation. A Report Response (REP-RSP) message including first information related to the measured CINR is sent. Second information related to a differential CINR of the at least two bands is sent via a Channel Quality Information Channel (CQICH).

A mobile station (MS) selects a target anchor base station (BS) with which the MS desires to communicate through a fast feedback channel, and transmits a codeword allocated to the selected target anchor BS to a current anchor BS. Upon receiving the codeword, transmitting to the MS, by the anchor BS, fast feedback channel allocation information for the selected BS corresponding to the received codeword. The MS switches to a new anchor BS corresponding to the fast feedback channel allocation information.

A transmission side maps a predetermined preamble pattern to an operation mode, and upon a change in operation mode, transmits a preamble pattern corresponding to the changed operation mode. A noise power measuring system and method for a base station receiver are disclosed. In the system and method, a received signal is despread and the noise power of the despread received signal is estimated. An orthogonal code generator generates a noise power measurement orthogonal code, which is orthogonal to all the orthogonal codes presently being used by the mobile station. A correlator connected to the orthogonal code generator performs a correlation operation between the noise power measurement orthogonal code and the despread received signal. A noise power measurer connected to the correlator, measures the noise power from the output of the correlator.

A preamble generation method and apparatus are provided for improving transmit diversity by changing a preamble structure in a broadband wireless communication system using multiple antennas based on a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scheme. First pilot tones associated with different antennas are selected. The first pilot tones are multiplied by different first Walsh codes. Second pilot tones associated with the same antenna are sequentially selected along a frequency axis. The second pilot tones are multiplied by a second Walsh code. Preambles are generated by assigning, to at least two symbol durations, output signals multiplied by the first and second Walsh codes. Consecutive pilot tones during each of the at least two symbol durations are spaced by one pilot tone, and code streams of the first and second Walsh codes are alternately multiplied by the pilot tones. The preamble structure has orthogonality between the antennas using frequency, time and code domains.

The method includes the steps of, simultaneously transmitting by each of the base stations downlink signals from transmission antennas at a first time point based on a processing delay time for a signal to be transmitted; simultaneously receiving by each of the base stations an uplink signal at reception antennas at a second time point; and setting a time interval from the first time point to the second time point as a guard interval for distinguishing a transition from an uplink period to a downlink period.
