The following invention is primarily concerned with new and improved systems for viewing a sporting event. In particular, systems which combine images of a real scene with computer generated imagery where the computer generated imagery is particular to the position and pointing attitude of the device. Being useful to spectators of the game baseball, the device can produce images showing where a strike zone is relative to the position of the players; can produce images of ball tracks; of replays and many other forms of information having characteristics dependent on a viewer's position and attitude.

Vision systems having knowledge of position and attitude can reliably determine what scenes are being addressed by the system. Real images of the scene can then be augmented with computer generated information which relates to the known scene. A determination of position and attitude of the device identifies which scene is being addressed. A computer recalls information regarding the scene and generates imagery according to that recalled information. The computer generated imagery is then combined with an image of the scene to form an augmented image which is presented to the user aligned to the viewing direction of the device.

In response to user requests in combination with present conditions such as time, location weather, etc., a database request is executed against stored photo set-up data to produce a result set of photo set-up descriptors. These descriptors are used both manually and automatically to assist a photographer user in setting up a photo exposure in agreement with the prescribed parameters. These systems may be directly coupled with a DSLR type camera and may operate via user controls and interfaces thereof. In alternative versions, these system have independent control and user interfaces with outputs coupled to a DSLR control. In still further other versions, an entirely manual system leaves it to the photographer to set up a camera of the art in agreement with parameters presented in resultsets.

Computer vision systems provide a user a view of a scene whereby an image of the scene may have been augmented with information generated by a computer. Computer vision systems of the present invention include graphical user interfaces which have been discovered to operably interact with geometric constructs of a user environment, objects within a scene, perspective of the scene, image features of a signal which represents the scene, among others. These graphical user interfaces of the invention do not behave as those known because operation of these interfaces depends on properties and features particular to computer vision systems which have position and attitude determining means.

The device determines which objects are being addressed by searching a database containing preprogrammed information relating to objects. Information relating to objects being addressed can then be presented at a user interface. Methods of the system includes the steps of indicating a direction, determining position, searching a database, and presenting information to a user.

Augmented reality systems recall prescribed stored information relating to scenes being addressed by an optical imager based upon a multiplicity of alternative search modes each based upon different criteria related to both systems states and environmental states. Primarily, sensor based and visual based search modes are switched depending upon physical states of these augmented reality type platforms. When deployed in near-field uses, information recall is primarily based upon image recognition algorithms and strategy. Conversely, when these augmented reality imaging systems are deployed in far-field type uses, search modes switch to those modes based upon sensors which measure physical attributes and states of the device, and subsystems to determine probable matter being addressed.

Compound images are presented whereby an optically captured image is over late with a pewter generated image portion to form the complete augmented image for presentation to a user. Upon the particular conditions of the imager, imaged scene and the Imaging environment, these imaging systems include automated responses. Computer-generated images which are overlaid optically captured images are either bolstered all in the detail and content where an increase in information is needed, or they are tempered where a decrease in information is preferred as determined by prescribed conditions and values.
