摘要:
The present invention is directed to a thermoplastic molding composition comprising a polycarbonate resin and a pigmenting amount of black iron oxide. The invention is predicated on the surprising findings that this composition yields stable, streaking-free molded articles. A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a flame retarding agent and iron oxide based pigment selected from the group consisting of black iron oxide and red iron oxide, said flame retarding agent comprising polytetrafluoroethylene; the composition is characterized in that it is streaking-free and in that its flammability rating is at least 5V-1/8" in accordance with UL-94.

A Chemical Blowing Agent (CBA) concentrate was developed comprising a modifying agent and a chemical blowing agent. The CBA is characterized in that its decomposition products contain a primary amine. The modifying agent is a blend of a maleic anhydride copolymer and a butadiene based rubber. It was surprisingly found that resin degradation which often accompanies foam moldings using a CBA of the present type and is expressed in terms of a reduction in the molecular weight of the resin, is much reduced upon the incorporation of the modifying agent and chemical blowing agent of the invention. The concentrate may optionally further comprise a polymeric resin component.

The present invention is directed to flame retardant, pigmented polycarbonate molding compositions which properties include both good flame resistance properties and virtual freedom from streaking. The compositions are particularly suitable for use in molding machines using hot runner tools. The composition of the invention comprise a thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonate resin, a flame retarding agent, pigments, polytetrafluoroethylene--ASTM Type 3--and an amount of finely divided hydrophobic silicon dioxide sufficient for providing streaking-free molded articles.

Foamable, thermoplastic molding composition exhibiting an improved level of impact resistance is provided. The composition, which is suitable for the preparation of expanded molded parts, comprise a thermoplastic resin, preferably at least one selected from a group consisting of polycarbonate, polyalkylene terephthalate, aromatic polyester and polyester carbonate, a nucleating agent, a chemical blowing agent and an anhydride. It was unexpectedly found that the composition is suitable for the molding of articles having an improved level of impact resistance.

A process for making a photochromic optical lens is disclosed. In a first embodiment of the process a multi-plied laminate, containing a ply of photochromic thermoplastic polyurethane (herein “TPU”) and a ply containing thermoplastic polycarbonate, is first placed in the cavity of a suitable mold. The ply that contains polycarbonate resin is placed facing the cavity. Thermoplastic polycarbonate resin is then injected into the cavity. In a second embodiment, referred to as an over-mold method, polycarbonate is first injection molded into a molding cavity to form a substrate. Photochromic TPU is, in a subsequent step, injected into the cavity to form a superstrate overlay. In both embodiments, the articles thus molded are suitable for the preparation of optical lenses.

A thermoplastic molding composition having improved release properties is disclosed. The composition contains a polycarbonate and an additive amount of an epoxy conforming structurally to ##STR1## where R is a member selected from the group consisting of glyceryl and trimethyl propyl radicals, x is 0 to 20 and R' is a C.sub.1-4 alkyl radical.

A thermoplastic molding composition comprising a resinous blend of polycarbonate, polyester and an impact modifier and an additive amount of a siloxane compound containing a pendant oxirane group is disclosed. It was surprisingly and unexpectedly discovered that unlike the corresponding compositions which contain no siloxane compound, the inventive composition is capable of being dried at low temperatures prior to molding and still maintain high impact strength.

A pigmented thermoplastic molding composition is disclosed comprising(i) about 90 to 98 percent of an aromatic polycarbonate,(ii) about 1 to 9 percent of ABS, and(iii) about 1 to 9 percent of a grafted olefinic copolymer which is a graft polymer of one or more unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or the anhydride of said acid on an olefinic copolymer backbone. The composition is noted to have good mechanical properties and the articles molded therefrom have good cosmetics.
