A method of providing resource unit based data block partitioning may include determining, for a bit stream to be encoded in a coding scheme including an upper layer coding and a physical layer coding, whether upper layer coding is enabled. The method may further include, in response to the upper layer coding being enabled, partitioning the bit stream into one or more blocks for forward error correction coding. The one or more blocks may have a block size determined based on a size of a resource unit. The resource unit size may correspond to one or more units predefined in the physical layer for the resource allocation. A corresponding apparatus is also provided.

A carrier assignment method, a multi-carrier base station and a wireless communication device using the same are proposed. The carrier assignment method is adapted for assigning carriers in a paging group for an ABS with multi-carriers, and includes the following step. At least two paging carriers is assigned in a paging group, where all assigned carriers belonging to a paging group are in the same frequency band. Also, small but close frequency bands are grouped into a super band, where different carriers in different super bands are assigned into different paging groups. The wireless communication device determines the paging carrier index for itself by a mapping function of a mobile identification and the number of carriers. The paging message for the wireless communication device is sent only on the paging carrier corresponding to the determined paging carrier index.

A method for estimating frequency offset is provided. First, a baseband signal with a preamble featuring quasi-periodic property is received. Next, the quasi-periodic property of the preamble of the received baseband signal is reconstructed by interpolation. Next, a frequency offset angle is estimated by using the reconstructed baseband signal. The accuracy of estimating frequency offset is increased because of better reconstructed quasi-periodic property of the preamble.

A pilot selection method adapted for selecting rank-2 pilot patterns for a macrocell advanced base station (ABS), a femtocell ABS and a non-macrocell and non-femtocell ABS is proposed along with a wireless communication system and a base station thereof. Different rank-2 pilot pattern is selected for a femtocell ABS from its overlay macrocell ABS and non-macrocell and non-femtocell ABS rank-2 pilot patterns. Another pilot selection method for selecting a rank-1 pilot pattern for a femtocell ABS co-located with at least a macrocell ABS is also proposed. Different rank-1 pilot pattern is selected for a femtocell ABS from its overlay macrocell ABSs using rank-1 and/or rank-2 pilot patterns, where some of the macrocell ABSs can use rank-2 pilot patterns and the rest of the macrocell ABSs just use rank-1 pilot patterns. Also, different rank-1 pilot pattern is selected for the femtocell ABS from its neighboring femtocell ABSs using rank-1 pilot patterns.
