Abstract: The apparatus for determining coefficients of friction collects data required for determining static and dynamic coefficients of friction between various materials. The apparatus includes a ramp with adjustable slope and a plurality of test masses for placement on the ramp. Upslope lights and sensors, downslope lights and sensors, and a digital angle meter are installed on the ramp. The apparatus has a timing device having a display to show the elapsed time between a test mass passing the upslope sensor and the downslope sensor. The operator can determine the static coefficient of fraction from the tangent of the angle displayed on the digital angle meter when a test mass first begins to slide, and can compute the kinetic coefficient of friction from the angle displayed on the digital angle meter and the elapsed time shown on the timing device.

Abstract: The spinning disc centrifuge rotor includes a sample holder formed from a cylindrical disc body and a cover plate that are made from a transparent material, such as polycarbonate. The disc-shaped body has two concentric or coaxial recesses defined therein. The first recess forms a cylindrical well or sample chamber for receiving a generally cylindrical rock sample. The second recess has a larger diameter than the first recess, and is shallower, forming a fluid collection area above the sample well, the second recess forming an annular ring extending around the top edge or rim of the sample well. An O-ring snugly within the outer wall of the second recess and forms a seal between the cover plate and the floor of the second recess, preventing fluid leakage. A rotor shaft extends from the bottom face of the cylindrical disc.

Abstract: The method of treating impaired wound healing in diabetics comprises the step of administering an effective amount of a glycogen synthase kinase 3-β (GSK-3β) inhibitor to a diabetic patient in need thereof to activate the NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and genes downstream of Nrf2 that normally regulate the expression and coordination of antioxidant responses during wound healing, but are suppressed in the diabetic patient undergoing the oxidative stress that can occur during wound healing. The GSK-3β inhibitor may be lithium or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or TDZD-8 (4-benzyl-2-methyl-1,2,4-thiadiazolidine-3,5-dione). The method may further comprise the step of testing the diabetic patient for the presence of oxidative stress and decreased Nrf2, which enables the early or prophylactic treatment of the patient with a GSK-3β inhibitor when the patient first presents with a wound, rather than waiting for other symptoms of impaired wound healing to occur.

Abstract: In order to prepare an anti-inflammatory composition extracted from the skin of the Arabian Gulf catfish (Arius bilineatus (Valenciennes)), a gelatinous secretion is collected from the skin of the Arabian Gulf catfish. The gelatinous secretion is biologically active due to the presence of biologically active proteins and lipids. The lipids are extracted from the gelatinous secretion, and then are mixed into an inert dermatological cream. The inert dermatological cream serves as a carrier for the lipids. Preferably, the mixture includes approximately 0.2% to 0.8% of the lipids by weight. Either the total lipids may be used in the mixture, or the lipids, prior to mixing into the cream, may be fractionated into major lipid fractions.

Abstract: The pagewidth inkjet printer provides for simultaneous printing across a horizontal portion of a sheet of paper, as opposed to horizontal scanning of a conventional inkjet printer. The pagewidth inkjet printer includes a platen for incrementally translating a page of paper and a controller for selectively driving rotation of the platen. A housing is mounted adjacent to the platen and is fixed with respect thereto. A plurality of print heads are mounted within the housing. Each print head has a plurality of nozzles for selectively ejecting ink, and each nozzle is adapted for ejecting a distinct color of ink. The plurality of nozzles of each print head are aligned in a direction parallel to a direction of translation of the page of paper. The plurality of print heads are arrayed and aligned linearly along a direction orthogonal to the direction of translation of the page of paper.

Abstract: The automated sample extraction device is a device for the automatic extraction of chemical samples. The device includes a housing defining an open interior region. A rotating carousel is disposed within the housing, and a plurality of sample holders are mounted thereon. A plurality of sample storage tanks each contain a unique chemical sample, and a desired volume of at least one chemical sample is drawn from a respective one of the sample storage tanks to a respective at least one of the plurality of sample holders. The carousel is rotated so that the desired volume of the at least one chemical sample may be dispensed into a receptacle positioned adjacent the carousel. The at least one chemical sample may then be mixed, heated, cooled, shaken and/or vibrated within the receptacle prior to dispensing.

Abstract: The tactile directional guide system provides directional information in the form of vibrations for use during emergency evacuations and the like. The tactile directional guide system includes a vibrational module adapted for mounting on a support surface, such as the floor or wall of a hallway or corridor, as non-limiting examples. The vibrational module includes a plurality of members linearly arrayed along a longitudinal direction and a plurality of vibrators respectively coupled to the plurality of members. A controller is in communication with the plurality of vibrators and is configured to selectively sequentially actuate the plurality of vibrators in either a forward longitudinal direction or a rearward longitudinal direction to provide a tactile directional output.
