A valve for dental syringes and the like has its actuator provided with a cam. When the actuator is moved axially it engages a valve seal member and rocks the member on the valve seat so that initially only a portion of the valve about the periphery of the valve seal member is open. Moving the actuator further causes the entire valve seal member to move off of the valve seat so that the full circumference about the seal member is opened. The rocking of the valve seal member on the seat and then moving it axially from the valve seat provides substantially linear volume control from zero flow to the designed maximum flow of the valve.

A pressurized dental handpiece has a housing in which a shaft is journalled and from which the shaft projects to support a dental tool. A high speed air turbine runner is on the shaft and is propelled by air under superatmospheric pressure brought to a nozzle for the runner through a conduit. A tubular extension of the housing surrounds the conduit and is in communication with the housing to serve as the turbine exhaust duct to the atmosphere. An adjustable valve regulates the spent exhaust air flowing from the extension to maintain a superatmospheric pressure in the extension. Some spent air is allowed to flow from the extension around the discharge of a water tube passing through the extension and the housing in the direction of the projecting shaft and dental tool.

An apparatus for characterizing the performance of air turbine handpieces including high speed dental handpieces and chucking devices in terms of speed, torque, power, and air consumption include an air or fluid supply source for the handpiece and various sensors to measure input, flow rate, temperature and pressure and output speed and forces on the output shaft of the handpiece. Data from the sensors is collected, collated, processed and recorded to continuously provide a record of the handpiece characteristics for purposes of evaluating efficiency, quality control, safety and compliance with standards.

Methods for controlling and/or regulating of a compressed-gas-operable medical or dental drive device and a control and/or regulating device for performing such methods are described. In one method according to a first embodiment, a rotor of the drive device is operated at an essentially constant rotational speed (n1) by adjusting the gas pressure and/or the flow rate of the compressed gas through a valve and the rotational speed is reduced on reaching a pressure value (p2) of the compressed gas which is lower than the maximum gas pressure (pmax) of the compressed gas. In the case of a method according to a second embodiment, the gas pressure of the compressed gas and the rotational speed of the rotor are altered on reaching a rotational speed limit value (n2, n3) of the rotor by adjusting the valve.

A system for driving an electric handpiece in response to a pneumatic control signal may provide for fast interchange of handpieces, self-calibration and wide dynamic range of operation with precise speed control. The system may be incorporated into virtually any dental treatment center using traditional pneumatic drive handpieces, and a conversion kit may facilitate such conversion. The system may provide not only for controlling the speed and torque of a tool coupled to an electric drive handpiece responsive to a pneumatic control signal, it may also provide for coupling cooling air and treatment media, such as air and/or water to the handpiece. Coupling of a handpiece to an operating base of the system, including coupling of media lines and electrical connections may be made with a simple press and twist action using quick connection structure.

A detection system for remotely determining the speed of a rotating tool tip in a pneumatic dental handpiece. A means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool tip monitors a periodic mechanical function at the pneumatic hose connected to the handpiece. The monitored periodic mechanical function serves to provide feedback that is used to control the speed of the rotating tool tip. The means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool detects a mechanical function of the rotating tool tip, which in transmitted to a controller. The controller in turn regulates the operation of an air supply valve in response to the detected mechanical function. The valve regulates the flow of air to the handpiece. By continuously adjusting the flow of air through the valve into the pneumatic hose, the speed of the rotating tool is maintained at the desired cutting speed.

A handheld pneumatic medical device, such as a dentist handpiece, is provided for rotating a bur about an axis. Importantly, the device utilizes the boundary layer effect to transfer energy from the fluid flow to rotation of the bur. As a result, the device is operated without creating high decibel noise. Structurally, the device includes a housing defining a chamber, and a hub mounted for rotation in the chamber. When engaged with the hub, the bur passes through a distal aperture in the housing. The housing is further provided with a port for introducing a fluid into the chamber substantially tangential to the axis. Also, the device includes disks connected to the hub and substantially perpendicular to the axis. Operationally, boundary layer effect forces between the fluid flow and the disks cause the hub and the bur to rotate about the axis.
