In a horizontal metal extrusion press to enable direct measurement of the alignment of the tools, the moving crosshead (9) and the receiver holder (12) in relation to the press axis, the tie rods (4) of the press frame (3) of high dimensional stability are provided with at least three clearance-measuring probes (25), which are directed at central angles of 120.degree. or less radially towards the press axis (X--X) and are centrally adjustable to a reference clearance from the press axis. The probes are disposed in radial planes (R2, R3, e.g.) in which they detect measuring surfaces (27, 28) provided on and centered at least on the receiver or receiver holder (12) and on the tools, in the working position and/or selected positions of the receiver holder and the tools. To enable the measurements to be effected without stoppages, it is advantageous to provide non-contact clearance-measuring probes, for example measuring on the basis of eddy current, laser or ultrasound.

In tube extrusion presses, there are two steps in production. Firstly, a mandrel pierces a hole through the center of a billet, the tip of the mandrel ending up just within the opening of the extrusion die. Secondly, the now hollow cylindrical billet is extruded through the die and over and around the tip of the mandrel to produce a tube. To limit the movement of the mandrel, stroke-limiting rods are provided which pass through bores in a part attached to the mandrel and in a fixed part of the press. The rods can be held fast in one or both of these bores, or released to slide through them, depending on the stage reached in the extrusion process.

The disclosure of the present invention pertains to a device for stopping and accurately registering one or more containers of an extrusion press adapted to produce rod or tube products. There is disclosed a rotating hub to which three containers are secured for rotation by the hub into three radially located stations, two being preparation stations and the remaining one an extrusion station. In the vicinity of the extrusion station a pivotal stop is arranged having an extended position, in which position it is engageable by a container being rotated into the extrusion station and a retracted position where the stop allows a container in the extrusion station to pass to the next station. Also in the vicinity of the extrusion station a latch and key is provided being movable into an opening formed in the containers when the containers are in the extrusion station, the latch and key serving to accurately position the containers relative to the die of the press yet allowing the container to move axially thereof.

The invention relates to extrusion and pipe presses (1), comprising a press frame consisting of a cylindrical spar (2) and a counter spar (4) connected thereto, in which a mobile billet container holder (7) supporting a billet container (8), which puts a billet (18) to be pressed, which was introduced by a loading device, into a press position in front of the counter spar (4) with the associated tool (38), and a mobile punch crosshead (6) are provided. In the cylindrical spar (2), a main cylinder, or press cylinder, is arranged, which in the cylinder housing (9) thereof receives a press piston (11), which at the front end thereof that is supported by the punch crosshead (6) is connected to a press punch (19). A compensation tank (15), which delivers hydraulic oil to the press piston (11) by way of a slider plate (28), is assigned to a main cylinder housing (9) connected to a tank line. With an extrusion press such as this, the considerable hydraulic expenditure, and in particular the non-productive time, are to be substantially reduced, while making the structural design more compact and simple at the same time. To accomplish this, the advancing and feed motions of the billet container holder (7) and punch crosshead (6) with press piston (11) are carried out by electromotive force, and both the precompression of the billet (18) loaded into the billet container (8) and the subsequent compression of the billet (18) are done by hydraulic loading of the press piston (11). Electric motors (12, 13) are assigned to the punch crosshead (6) and the billet container holder (7) as adjustment drives. A large-scale filling valve (20) is integrated in the cylinder housing (9) of the main cylinder for loading the press piston (11).

The stem slide device of the present invention in an extruder has a stem vertical movement support (71) and slide guide members (72-1, 2) fastened to the support and forming guide grooves. A stem (6) pushing against a billet loaded in a container is held at the slide table (73) horizontally. The slide table slides in the vertical direction along the vertical face of the support. When the slide table is positioned at the bottom end of the guide groove, the hydraulic cylinders (77-1, 2) are driven so that the rods (78-1, 2) push the back surface of the slide table against the vertical face of the support. Therefore, the axis of the stem is held matched with the axis of the container.
