Abstract: A drag-reducing air chamber is formed under a watercraft when the watercraft is underway. Air enters into the air chamber when the watercraft is moving forward. Supplemental air is introduced into the air chamber by an air scoop mounted to the bow in a first embodiment and in side-mounted air scoops in another embodiment. A one-way valve in an air passageway between the air scoop and the air chamber prevents air from flowing from the air chamber to the air scoop. A pair of elongate rails depends from opposite sides of the hull and defines the sides of the air chamber. Shorter rails may be used in high-speed applications where the bow of the watercraft is lifted from the water.

Abstract: The invention is an improved aluminum water craft using a plurality of aluminum pontoons to stabilize the craft. The hull of the craft has a truncated nullUnull shape with a first horizontal section and a second raised bow section. The hull is made from a single piece of construction material and includes a plurality of equally spaced apart concave-shaped reinforcing ribs pressed into the top surface of the construction sheets prior to forming the hull. The ribs provide additional rigidity and strength to the hull. The plurality of pontoons join to form a segmented, un-pressurized, water-tight, air filled floatation collar around the hull of the water craft. The pontoon segments are separated by bulkhead plates. The pontoons are inclined from the horizontal to promote smooth travel over turbulent water. The pontoons are constructed from single sheets of construction material. A plurality equally spaced and parallel reinforcing ribs pressed into the rectangular sheets. The sheets are then rolled into the cylindrical shaped pontoons and welded.

Abstract: An unventilated, stepped hydroplaning boat hull has at least one midship step. Two separated wetted planing surfaces are thereby established—a forward surface just forward of the step and an aft surface just forward of an aft edge of the hull. The angles of attack of each planing surface preferably lie in the range 2.0-6.5 degrees, and are preferably equal. The midship step is preferably located longitudinally in a range of 0.45 to 0.51 times the projected chine length of the hull, measured aftward from a forwardmost point of the chine.

Abstract: High performance of a sailboard is achieved over a wider range of wind and water conditions by providing a hull having two or more planing surfaces which may differ in shape and/or aspect ratio. Drag due to suction at steps between planing surfaces is reduced by venting to the air. Cusp shaping of the respective planing surfaces can reduce and stabilize the angle of attack at the displacement/planing transition without causing fore-and-aft pitching effects known as porpoising.

Abstract: A jet powered boat may be provided with a water monitor for fire fighting purposes. The conduit for the monitor is connected to an opening through the bottom of the hull to draw water vertically from beneath the hull. Two motors are provided in the boat. One motor is configured to propel water through the monitor conduit to the water monitor. The other motor is configured to propel water through a propulsion jet at the rear of the boat. In one embodiment, a second propulsion jet is provided at the rear of the boat, connected to the conduit for the water monitor. A baffle at the intersection of the second propulsion jet and the monitor conduit may be operated to selectively direct water to either the monitor or the propulsion jet. In this embodiment, the two motors may be placed symmetrically on either side of the longitudinal centerline of the boat. In another embodiment, in which one motor exclusively supplies water to the water monitor (without the second propulsion jet), the two motors may be placed fore and aft along the centerline of the boat. The hull of the jet powered boat is shaped with progressively shallower segments of the hull bottom spaced farther from the hull centerline to provide the directional stability of a “V” shape near the centerline, with a relatively flat shape near the sides of the hull for lateral stability. Debris screens may selectively be placed in the water intake openings through the hull to block pump-damaging debris.

Abstract: A boat hull structure comprising a pair of laterally-spaced hulls having V-shaped bottom portions that are each symmetrical about a vertical plane extending through its longitudinal axis. A channel defined in each bottom portion that extends substantially along the length of each hull for trapping air and water to provide lift and to reduce "stuffing". Each channel defined by a pair of spaced, parallel and vertical channel walls and a horizontal base that interconnects the channel walls. A pair of strikes defined on each bottom portion that straddles the channel to define a high speed planing surface. The strikes preferably are located at the same elevation as the base of the channel so that the boat can plane on the strikes and the base of the channel at the same time. With this construction, the planing surface area of the boat hull structure is reduced, which enhances the speed performance of the boat hull structure.

Abstract: A ship's hull is constructed of a monohull forebody shaped to be lifted upwardly as the ship speeds through the water and a catamaran afterbody which extends to rear of the monohull forebody. A deck disposed over a tunnel defined between a pair of catamaran hulls which comprise the hull's catamaran afterbody is constructed and positioned to support most of the load of the ship thereon. Venting ducts extend from the deepest point at the boundary region between the monohull forebody and the catamaran afterbody to a location on the ship which remains at all times above water level. The venting ducts serve to maintain atmospheric pressure conditions within the tunnel. This prevents formation of undesirable subpressure conditions in the tunnel which if permitted to develop would interfere with the ability of the monohull to lift as the ship is accelereated.
