The invention relates to a control cartridge for single-lever mixer taps, comprising a housing in which a ceramic base disk and a rotatable and displaceable ceramic control disk resting on the base disk are situated. An inlet for the cold water and hot water, respectively, and an outlet for the mixed water are situated in the base disk, and the mixed water is diverted in the control disk and leaves the control cartridge via the outlet in the base disk. In order for automatic scalding protection to be integrated into the control cartridge, i.e., for the control cartridge to automatically close in the event of a scalding temperature of the mixed water, according to the invention at least one shape memory alloy (SMA) element is situated on the control disk, and takes on the temperature of the mixed water during operation of the control cartridge, and upon reaching a scalding temperature of the mixed water, expands and hereby automatically moves the control disk into the closed position in which no water arrives at the outlet, and the SMA element is supported on the one hand on the control disk and on the other hand on the housing.

The thermostat has a housing having a flange, an actuating rod secured to the housing at a first end thereof, a guide member slidably mounted on the actuating rod, a resilient seal spool provided around a second end portion of the actuating rod and secured to the guide member, a heat sensitive cylinder housing the seal spool and secured to the guide member, wax pellets provided in the heat sensitive cylinder to enclose the seal spool. The flange has a hole so as to pass a coolant, and the thickness of the resilient seal spool being set between 25% and 5% of the diameter of the actuating rod, thereby reducing a spring constant of a return spring of the thermostat. A cooling fan switch is provided for starting the cooling fan at a low coolant temperature.

This liquid cooling system for internal combustion engines employs a double acting thermostat to prevent coolant temperature fluctuation over a large range of engine loads and speeds and to selectively block coolant flow through the bypass circuit so that the heater and defrost circuit at engine start up and idle will have optimal flow from the coolant pump through the engine for quick heat and defrost purposes. With increased engine speed for vehicle operation, the pump increases coolant flow and pressure, causing the thermostat to open the bypass circuit in parallel with the heater core circuit. This increases flow capacity of the system and eliminate pump cavitation to enhance pump efficiency and system service life. At predetermined higher coolant temperatures, a pellet in the thermostat expands to effect thermostat opening of the high capacity radiator circuit of the system and closing the bypass circuit so that efficiency is further increased and excessive heat energy is effectively dissipated from the coolant.
