This invention provides a helicopter flight training device. The device comprises, in combination, a free-flying, radio-controlled, scale model of a helicopter and a flight station that is a substantially actual size simulation of a helicopter cockpit with its associated individual flight controls. The individual flight controls of the flight station incorporate means to convert their operation into a radio signal transmitted to the scale model helicopter to actuate the appropriate flight controls therein to control the flight thereof. In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the flight station consists of dual flight stations with dual flight controls to facilitate teaching student pilots. The device of this invention provides the utmost in safety to the student and instructor during the early, most hazardous, stages of flight training.

A helicopter hover simulator comprising a helicopter cabin with conventional flight controls comprising a collective pitch stick (ascent and descent), a cyclic pitch stick (attitude), antitorque pedals (rotational movement) and a throttle (rate of operation) mounted on a tiltable base member, which in turn is mounted on a ball and socket universal joint, which in turn is mounted on the upper base member of a vertically extendible pantograph assembly which includes a vertical lift hydraulic cylinder for raising and lowering the cabin. The helicopter cabin is tiltably moved in a fore and aft direction by a fore and aft hydraulic cylinder actuating the tiltable base member, and it is tilted laterally by a lateral hydraulic cylinder actuating the tiltable base member. A real-time simulation system of the aerodynamic loads generated by the wake of a rotor of a hover-capable aircraft on the aircraft itself is described, said system comprising: a cockpit seat for a pilot; a simulated control device of the aircraft able to receive a simulated command from the pilot to simulate a flight condition of the aircraft; simulation means able to generate a simulated representation of the flight condition; and a processing unit configured to receive as input a first signal associated with the command given via the control device and to generate and output a second control signal for the simulation means associated with the simulated aerodynamic loads. The processing unit cyclically generates a vortex ring with a radius, associates a number of control points with the vortex ring, computes the velocity induced on the control points, moves and updates the vortex ring, and generates the second signal on the basis of the velocities induced on the control points by the vortex rings.

The standard objects are processed directly by the graphics board. The at least one articulating mechanism is for rotating the vehicle simulator operator environment along at least one axis of rotational motion to provide for a tilting motion of the vehicle simulator operator environment along a Z-axis of rotation. There is also an articulating mechanism for moving the vehicle simulator operator environment along at least an X-axis of rotational motion along the boom and a Y-axis of translational motion with the boom relative to the vehicle simulator base.
