The invention relates to a method for producing chewing gum granules. The method comprises at least the steps of feeding a gum composition including at least gum base into an extruder (2), pressurizing the gum composition in the extruder, extruding the gum composition through a die plate (5), and cutting the extruded gum composition in a liquid filled chamber (4). The extruded gum composition comprises at least 71% Wt, gum base and the cut granules are included in compressed gum tablets. The invention further relates to a chewing gum product, and to a chewing gum granulating system.

The present invention discloses a sugar-free hard coating prepared from a liquid maltitol syrup comprising DP4+ fraction. In the chewing gum process, the liquid maltitol can be applied at high dry substance, i.e. higher than 65%. The obtained hard coating is crunchy, non-sticky and is not cracking during post-processing.

A coating apparatus is described for coating the surface of a center or core of chewing gum with a sugarcoated layer. The apparatus includes a cylindrical fixed tub having a bottom and an inner fixed circumferential wall. A rotating plate is mounted on the bottom of the fixed tub so as to be coaxial with the fixed tub. The surfaces of the rotating plate and the fixed tub are determined to allow the smooth transfer of the gum centers from the rotating plate to the inner fixed circumferential wall of the fixed tub. The inner fixed circumferential wall of the fixed tub is configured with ridges so as to reduce the tendency of the gum centers to adhere to the wall and to increase the coating area and the drying area of the gum centers.

A process for continuously producing a chewing gum base comprises the steps of continuously adding a hard elastomer, a filler and lubricating agents into a continuous mixer, subjecting the elastomer, filler and lubricating agents to a dispersive mixing operation followed by a distributive mixing operation and continuously discharging the resulting chewing gum base from the mixer while the adding and mixing steps are in progress. The lubricating agents are introduced into the continuous mixer at a plurality of spatially separated feed inlets. Preferably part of the lubricating agents are introduced into the mixer with the hard elastomer and the filler prior to the dispersive mixing zone, and a portion of the lubricating agents are introduced into the mixer downstream of the dispersive mixing zone but prior to the distributive mixing zone. The lubricating agents may include elastomer solvents, soft elastomers, plastic polymers and softening agents such as fats, oils and waxes.

A method of producing chewing gum with a controlled flavor release comprises the steps of continuously adding chewing gum ingredients to a continuous mixer, the chewing gum ingredients comprising one or more flavoring agents, the continuous mixer comprising a plurality of spatially separated feed inlets through which the chewing gum ingredients are added to the mixer, and the one or more flavoring agents being added to the mixer simultaneously at two or more feed inlets; subjecting the chewing gum ingredients to a continuous mixing operation within the mixer, thereby forming a chewing gum composition; and continuously discharging the chewing gum composition from the mixer while chewing gum ingredients continue to be introduced and mixed within the mixer. The locations at which the flavor components are added controls the flavor characteristics of the chewing gum composition.
