    Abstract: A set of osteotomes have conical tips with free end diameters alternately increasing by a constant increment, k, as a step function, beginning with the first osteotome; and working base diameters alternately increases by a constant increment, C, as a step function, beginning with the second osteotome. For seven osteotomes, the first and second diameters respectively are: 1 mm and 2 mm; 1 mm and 3 mm; 2 mm and 3 mm; 2 mm and 4 mm; 3 mm and 4 mm; 3 mm and 5 mm; and 4 mm and 5 mm. In a first mode all seven osteotomes are used to provide very gradual diameter escalations. In a second mode the first, third, fifth, and seventh osteotomes provide conventional Summers' diameter escalations. In third and fourth modes the first, fourth, and seventh osteotomes, and the second, fifth, and seventh osteotomes respectively provide increasingly more aggressive Summers' type escalations.

    Abstract: A reciprocating endodontic hand tool in which the torque applied to an instrument such as a debriding file can be set at or below an endurance limit of the file below which failure of the instrument will not occur. In preferred embodiments the tool can switch between settings in which the torque applied to the instrument is between the endurance limit of the file and an elastic limit of the file, by setting forward and reverse angles of rotation within specified limits. This reduces or eliminates opportunites for plastic distortion, fatigue and breakage of the file during the canal debriding/cleaning/shaping process in a root canal treatment or retreatment. In some embodiments the torque may be set to at or below a durability limit of the file below which failure of the instrument will not occur through repetitive strain over the course of a particular root canal treatment or retreatment.

    Abstract: A dental system comprises a dental prophy angle and an adjustable angle adapter. The prophy angle includes a housing and a guard with a concave inner surface. The adapter is configured to drive the prophy angle and the adapter includes a body, a nose, and an outer joint. The nose is configured to receive a portion of a prophy angle. The body is adjustably connected to the nose. The outer joint includes a ball portion connected to the nose, and a ball receiver positioned on the body. The ball receiver includes a first portion coupled to a first end of the body and a second portion attachable to the first portion. The nose is rotatable relative to the body into at least a first configuration and a second configuration. The concave inner surface of the guard engages a convex outer surface of the ball receiver.

    Abstract: A dental work site illumination system provides illumination directly onto a work site under professional dental care. The illumination emanates from a light source within the swivel coupling, the light source being energized by an electrical generator mounted within the coupling. The generator is driven by a turbine wheel that is caused to rotate by a flow of exhaust fluid, i.e. compressed fluid after having driven a dental tool. The light source transmits illumination to a fiber optic bundle that terminates adjacent to the dental work site.

    Abstract: A medical or dental handpiece has a grip. The grip includes first to third rotation shafts. The first and second shafts are connected through a first gear mechanism and the second and third shafts are connected through a second gear mechanism so that a rotation is transmitted from the first shaft through the first gear mechanism to the second shaft and then from the second shaft through the second gear mechanism to the third shaft. The first or second gear mechanism has an internal gear secured on one shaft and an external gear secured on the other shaft, the internal and the external gears being engaged with each other. The external gear is substantially enclosed within a cylindrical plane extending along a peripheral edge of the internal gear.
