    Abstract: An electrostatic paint spray gun comprises a needle-shaped electrode centrally seated in the paint channel which supplies paint to a spray nozzle and projects slightly beyond the spray nozzle. The electrode is composed of two needle electrodes disposed coaxially behind one another and electrically connected in series. The rear needle electrode is secured to the pistol tube and the forward needle is secured to a closure containing the spray nozzle and emplaced on the pistol tube of the spray gun. When the closure is in place, the rear electrode needle represents the electrical connection to the forward electrode needle, whereas, when the closure is removed, the tip of the rear electrode needle projects freely beyond the mouth of the pistol tube.

    Abstract: An electrostatic pump or pumping liquids having a resistivity in the range of 10.sup.10 to 10.sup.7 ohm cm has a pump housing. The pump housing includes a passageway through which the liquid is pumped, and a single injection electrode disposed upstream of the passageway. The electrode has a sharp electrically-conducting tip. A constriction in the region of the tip is shaped to conform to the surface configuration of the tip so that the liquid flows pass the tip in a laminar nonturbulent fashion through an orifice of reduced cross-section. The constriction is so dimensioned as to provide a high resistance path. A chamber is disposed downstream of the constriction and is of larger cross-section than the constriction. A discharged electrode is disposed in the chamber and is separated from the injection electrode by the chamber and the constriction. The injection and discharge electrodes are coupled to a high voltage generator to maintain an electric potential between the electrodes on the order of kilovolts.

    Abstract: A powder spray gun which, in the presently preferred embodiment, is particularly adapted for spraying a particulate powder spray onto the interior surfaces of containers and other target objects in a confined area. The apparatus includes a rigid tubular support member and a flexible powder transport tube. The rigid support member carries a high voltage cable having a charging electrode at one end. The flexible tube terminates in a discharge nozzle which may be adjustably mounted to the support member adjacent the charging electrode so as to permit variation of the angle at which the powder is released from the nozzle relative to the longitudinal axis of the support member. Intermediate the discharge nozzle and an upstream portion of the powder transport tube which is connected to the support member, the flexible tube is smoothly curved so as to prevent any sharp corners in the transport tube or the nozzle within which powder could collect and interrupt smooth, even discharge of powder from the gun.

    Abstract: A spray gun for airless atomization and electrostatic deposition of a coating material upon a substrate, including a gun nozzle tip element serving to prevent arcing from the gun nozzle tip to an adjacent electrical ground. As disclosed, the airless spray gun includes a metallic nozzle tip from which atomized liquid coating material is emitted, and the thus-emitted coating material is charged by an electrode mounted on the nozzle which is electrically isolated from the metallic tip. During use of the spray gun, the metallic tip becomes charged via electrical charge conduction through the emitted atomized coating material. To prevent arcing from the charged tip to an electrical ground, a pair of resistive threads are secured in bores in the spray gun nozzle, each having a first end electrically connected to the conductive tip and a second end extending slightly beyond the nozzle. If an electrical ground approaches the charged conductive tip, the resistive threads are positioned such that electrical energy on the tip is coupled to the electrical ground through one or both of the resistive threads in the form of a low energy corona discharge.

    Abstract: A disk boat assembly for holding workpieces to be processed within a chemical reaction processing apparatus during the chemical vapor process. The boat assembly includes a pair of electrically conductive rail members held rigidly and radially apart between two dielectric end holding members that electrically isolate the two rail members. A plurality of disk like plates are connected respectively to the two rail members and are interleaved such that adjacent disk plates are electrically isolated.     Abstract: An electrostatic high voltage isolation system with internal charge generation in which conductive coating material to be sprayed is electrostatically charged by charging discrete droplets of coating material transferred from a coating material source to a supply of coating material for a spray gun. The source of coating material includes an electrically grounded reservoir of coating material having a nozzle aperture in a bottom portion thereof, and the coating material in the reservoir is mechanically vibrated to produce a pulsed jet droplet flow of coating material from the nozzle into a supply container for the spray gun.     Abstract: An air atomizing nozzle assembly for electrostatic spray guns. The nozzle assembly includes a fluid tip through which liquid coating material is emitted, an air cap having openings through which pressurized air passes to atomize the liquid coating material emitted from the nozzle and having a pair of opposed air horns through which pressurized air passes to shape the atomized coating material into a flat fan spray pattern, and a retaining ring for securing the air cap to the gun barrel and fluid tip. An annular diffuser is located within an internal chamber in the nozzle assembly which receives the prezzurized fan-shaping air from a passageway passing through the barrel of the gun, redirects it, and equalizes the flow of the fan-shaping air to the opposed air horns.
