A sheet lateral registration system, especially for high speed printer print media, which can also provide sheet deskewing as well as lateral sheet registration, having substantially increased lateral translation movement re-centering time for the lateral sheet registration system by utilizing at least two lateral shifting rollers having at least two different radii which provide automatic nip closings and openings in their rotations (relative to opposing idlers), with larger radius circumferential lengths coordinated to the downstream distance of the subsequent sheet acquisition system. Additionally disclosed are coordinated position non-slip sheet feeding nips which may be positioned in the paper path between these dual radius deskewing and lateral registration rollers and the image transfer station of the printer.

An image recorder is provided. For mounting two plates on a drum, two side-to-side adjustment sections are used. Each of the side-to-side adjustment sections includes an outer nut portion and an inner nut portion movable by respective ball screws in a first direction perpendicular to a second direction in which the plates are fed. When a plate is fed with reference to the center of the drum as seen in the first direction, the inner nut portion is pivoted about the corresponding ball screw aside to a location such as not to hinder the movement of the plate. Thus, when a plurality of side-to-side adjustment sections are provided for side-to-side adjustment of plates, at least one of the side-to-side adjustment sections which is not in use is prevented from interfering with the plates.

A method for detecting the alignment of document in an automatic document feeder provides an optical scanner that has an automatic document feeder and a document. The automatic document feeder has a colored pattern layer in corresponding to a scanning window of the optical scanner. The document has at least a side edge. When the document is being fed into the automatic document feeder, the side edge is just positioned between the scanning window and the colored pattern layer. When the automatic document feeder is switched on to feed in the document, a first image retrieval is made from the document placed on the scanning window. After the document is fed in to an appropriate length, a second image retrieval is made from the document placed on the scanning window. A slant value is calculated out by the result of comparing the first.

The present invention includes apparatus and methods for feeding a mailpiece along a feed path in a mailing machine. An endless drive belt has a lower belt run adapted to feed a mailpiece in a downstream direction. A plurality of pivot arms are mounted in a sequence below the lower belt run. Each pivot arm has a respective roller mounted on a free end of the pivot arm. A respective bias mechanism associated with each pivot arm biases the pivot arm in an upward direction such that the roller contacts the lower belt run. A first pivot arm actuates a second pivot arm in a downward direction when the first pivot arm is actuated in a downward direction by a mailpiece fed by the endless belt.

An imaging system includes a roller assembly adapted to guide sheet material in the system into an accumulator and a sheet registration assembly. The registration assembly includes a lateral fence extending along a first edge of the accumulator. The lateral fence is adapted to contact a lateral edge of sheets fed into the accumulator. A longitudinal fence extends along a second edge of the accumulator. The longitudinal fence is adapted to contact a longitudinal edge of sheets fed into the accumulator. A fixed cam is included in the roller assembly. A rotatable registration finger is mounted in contact with the cam. During rotation of the registration finger, interaction between the registration finger and the cam causes the registration finger to contact each sheet fed into the accumulator by the roller, and to exert force to urge each sheet toward the lateral fence and the longitudinal fence of the accumulator. In an embodiment, the roller assembly includes a selectively rotating shaft. The cam is fixed with respect to the shaft, and the registration finger is mounted on the shaft. The registration finger can include a collar secured to the shaft, with a finger member adapted for contact with sheet material connected to the collar and a cam follower adapted for contact with the cam. The registration finger can be fabricated from a flexible plastic material, and the cam can be provided as a shaft bushing. A biasing mechanism can secured between the registration finger and the cam. The biasing mechanism can be provided as a compression spring biasing the registration finger into contact with the cam. A method of improving sheet registration in an imaging system including a roller assembly adapted to feed sheet material in the system into an accumulator is also provided.
