C water with a first titanium sulphate solution having a TiO.sub.2 titer of 230-260 g/l and an acid factor of 1.75-1.85, adding at 88.degree.-98.degree. C to the mixture a second titanium sulphate solution having a TiO.sub.2 titer of 230-260 g/l and an acid factor of 2.1-2.4 and heating the resulting mixture at boiling point. A volumetric ratio of from 3:100 to 12:100 is maintained between the first and the second solution.

Production of a hydrolysis solution used to form titanium oxyhydrate and in turn titanium dioxide pigments having a high degree of whiteness, by digesting titanium dioxide-containing raw material with sulfuric acid at a weight ratio of TiO2 to H2SO4 of about 1:1-20, crystallizing the digested titanium in the form of titanyl sulfate dihydrate by adjusting the acid concentration, separating and redissolving the crystals to form an aqueous hydrolysis solution, and separating the hydrolysis solution from any undissolved constitutents present, to permit subsequent hydrolysis of the titanium content in the hydrolysis solution to form titanium oxyhydrate, and recovery of the oxyhydrate thereby formed for producing in turn TiO2 pigment.

THIS INVENTION RELATES IN GENERAL TO A PROCESS FOR PREPARING A HIGH QUALITY TITANIUM DIOXIDE PIGMENT IN WHICH THE TITANIUM DIOXIDE IS IN THE ANATASE CRYSTAL FORM. THE PROCESS COMPRISES HYDROLYZING IN A PARTICULAR MANNER THE TITANIUM VALUES FROM A TITANIUM SULFATE-FERROUS SULFATE SOLUTION IN WHICH THE CONCENTRATION OF TITANIUM IS FROM 80 TO 180 G.P.L. CALCULATED AS TIO2 AND TREATING AND CALCINING THE HYDRATE SO FORMED TO PRODUCE A HIGH GRADE ANATASE TIO2 PIGMENT. USING THE HYDROLYSIS PROCESS OF THE INSTANT INVENTION, A HIGH GRADE ANATASE TITANIUM DIOXIDE PIGMENT MAY BE PRODUCED FROM A TITANIUM SULFATE-FERROUS SULFATE SOLUTION WITHOUT UTILIZING THE CONVENTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION STEP FOR REMOVING MOST OF THE IRON VALUES NOR THE CONCENTRATION STEP FOR INCREASING THE TITANIUM CONTENT IN THE LIQUOR TO AT LEAST 200G.P.L. Titanium metal values may be recovered from a titanium bearing source by subjecting the titanium bearing source to a reductive roast followed by leaching the reduced source with a hydrogen chloride source. Thereafter the leached titanium bearing source is precipitated by contact with a metal oxide such as ferric oxide in which the metal is present in a highly oxidized state. The precipitated titanium dioxide is separated and recovered while the spent liquor is treated to form hydrogen chloride which may be recycled to the leaching zone with a simultaneous formation of the metal oxide for recycle to the precipitation zone.

Titanium metal values may be recovered from a metal bearing source by subjecting the source to an oxidation step. The oxidized source is then divided, one portion being set to a reductive roast followed by leaching with hydrochloric acid. Thereafter, the remaining portion of the oxidized source is brought into contact with the leached solution whereby titanium dioxide is precipitated. The precipitated titanium dioxide is separated and recovered while the soluble metal values are treated for recovery thereof with a concurrent formation of hydrogen chloride, the latter being recycled back to the leaching zone.

Hydrolysis of a titanyl sulphate solution is carried out according to the autonucleation method of gradually adding the solution to a body of water at a substantially constant rate over 10-20 minutes, in such a way as to obtain an ionic concentration after one minute of feeding of from 75 to 105 g/l, the concentration of sulphuric acid in the final hydrolysis solution being regulated to a value of from 310 to 330 g/l by adding water from the commencement of clouding of the hydrolysis solution up to the end of hydrolysis.

In the recovery of titanium dioxide by subjecting an aqueous titanium dioxide hydrate suspension to at least one stage of filtering and washing to form a washed filter cake, adjusting the composition and calcining the adjusted and washed filter cake, the improvement which comprises filtering the aqueous titanium dioxide hydrate suspension under a pressure of about 1 bar to 16 bars to form a homogeneous substantially crack-free filter cake of a thickness of about 10 to 25 mm. Advantageously a membrane filter is employed, and washing is effected under a pressure of 1 to 16 bars and a liquid flow rate of 0.1 to 1 m/h to produce a filter cake having a solids content of at least 45 % by weight.

A process for refining titania-containing ores is described based on the increased reactivity of lower valent titanium oxides over tetravalent titanium oxides. The process includes the conversion of such titania ores, preferably beneficiated, to lower valent titanium oxides by reduction at elevated temperatures, extraction of the lower valent titanium values with HCl, oxidation of the extracted titanium values to tetravalent titanium compounds and recovery of purified TiO2 from the tetravalent titanium compounds. The residue left after the extraction step may be returned to the conversion step for reduction of residual tetravalent titanium values. Traces of fluorine or hydrofluoric acid have been found to catalyze the reaction.
