A variable speed gearless traction transmission particularly adapted for both power and manually operated vehicles, and when used on a power vehicle a continuous torque/speed take-off is provided that permits the engine to operate within a narrow range of speed and still provide a wide range of power and acceleration. The operation of the engine within such a narrow range not only reduces fuel consumption but also polluting emissions.

This invention has for purpose to improve the conditions of the tightening of the friction elements in a speed variator intended in particular to be employed in an automobile vehicle.It resides mainly in the use of a piston and cylinder assembly as means for pre-tightening the friction elements, this assembly defining a pressure chamber which is connected to the lubrication oil supply pump and to a relatively small-section discharge path. This arrangement permits modulating the pressure of the pre-tightening over a wide range in principle as a function of the temperature of the oil. Preferably, there is also provided a further correction as a function of the speed ratio established in the variator.

Dimers of .alpha.-alkyl styrene consisting of linear dimers with up to about 20% of cyclic dimers are substantially completely hydrogenated to improve the coefficient of traction of the dimers and to yield a composition comprising a major proportion of compounds having the general structure ##EQU1## wherein each R is an alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. These compositions are liquids which have good viscosity properties over a wide temperature range, have excellent oxidative stability, and are particularly useful as tractive fluids in applications requiring low temperature operability.

An idler wheel mounted on the mechanism engages different driving radii on the driving shaft to vary the rotational speed transmitted to the turntable by the idler wheel. The speed control mechanism resembles a crank and connecting arm with the idler wheel carried on the free end of the connecting arm. Upon rotation, the crank coacts with a camming means so that the crank, connecting arm and idler wheel are translated along the crank''s axis of rotation. The cranking effect and axial translation thereby serve to selectively position the idler wheel.
