In a toroidal variator a plurality of rolling elements (20, 22) are in driving engagement with an input and output race (10, 14) at respective contact regions. Each rolling element (20, 22) is mounted on a carriage assembly (26) for rotation about a rolling axis, and is being free to pivot about a tilt axis, the tilt axis passing through the rolling element (20, 22) perpendicular to the rolling axis, and intersecting the rolling axis at a roller center, whereby a change in the tilt axis causes a change in the variator ratio being the ratio of rotational speeds of the races. The tilt axis is arranged at an angle known as castor angle (see FIG. 4) to a plane (P) perpendicular to the variator axis (V). Each carriage assembly (26) can cause a movement of the rolling element (20, 22) with a component of rotation about a pitch axis (A, B). The pitch axis is defined as passing through the roller center and through the contact regions. Pitching the roller elements (20, 22) causes them to tilt, thereby changing the transmission ratio.

A compact structure is provided for a continuously variable transmission, which provides a more direct application of both load and control forces at the pivot trunnion. Load forces are produced from within the pivot trunnion, providing more direct control over load forces and their effect on contact forces between traction rollers and toric discs. Control forces which establish the desired transmission ratio are applied to the pivot trunnion in a manner which substantially eliminates twisting and squirming of the support rollers. High efficiency in operation, and improved assembly is provided with the compact structure disclosed.

A variator for a transmission of the toroidal-race rolling-traction type in which a multiplicity of input discs (1-4) and output discs (11-13) are arranged in coaxial sequence, all disc except the first (1) and last (4) in the sequence being formed with races (9, 10) on both of their faces. Drive is transmitted from the output discs to one (35) or several (45-47) output shafts, the output shaft or shafts preferably lying parallel to but displaced from the common axis (8) of the discs. Alternative ways of inter-relating the orientation of the torque-transmitting rollers (20), to produce single or multiple outputs of the transmission, are described. The invention offers the prospect of a variator of higher-than-normal traction-transmitting capacity but using discs of only normal size.

Based on the detecting signal and a command value signal from command value selecting means for selecting a command value of the transmission ratio, control means controls the power rollers to tilt.
