The present invention generally relates to voltage-controlled oscillators. More specifically, the present invention relates to method and circuitry for implementing a differentially tuned varactor-inductor oscillator. In one exemplary embodiment, the present invention includes an LC tank circuit having a couple of terminals, a first and second capacitors, and a first and second varactors. The first and second varactors are connected in series forming a first and a second node. The first capacitor connects the first node and one terminal of the LC tank circuit. The second capacitor connects the second node and the other terminal of the LC tank circuit. A pair of differential input control signals is applied across the first and the second varactors, respectively, to tune the LC tank circuit thereby generating an oscillator output.

The oscillator having a tunable resonant circuit has a switch for expanding the tuning range, which is connected in series with two coils jointly determining the oscillation frequency of the resonant circuit. A further coil, which is coupled to the resonant circuit in the region of the switch, is used to supply a switching voltage for the switch. In this arrangement, the other end of this third coil is coupled to a reference potential, with a capacitor, which acts as a short circuit for radio-frequency purposes, decoupling the switching voltage from the reference potential. Since the switching voltage is in this case coupled to an oscillator circuit node which is earthed for radio-frequency purposes, it is of no significance in this case which resistor is used to couple the switching voltage. This means that the resonant circuit is not resistively damped by the connection of the switching voltage. Coupled to the other end of the switching diode is a further component, preferably a fourth coil, which has the same inductance as the third coil, in order to dissipate the switching voltage. The first two coils are advantageously of the same size, so that this circuit coil jointly determining the oscillation frequency is earthed by the third coil exactly at its center. This means that the quality factor and the oscillation properties of the resonant circuit are not adversely affected.

An apparatus and method for continuous variable reactive impedance control. The apparatus and method enable the continuous variation of the reactive impedance of an oscillating circuit. A reactive component, in one embodiment a capacitor, is switched into the oscillating circuit for a duration at the beginning and end of each half cycle of the oscillation frequency. Through varying the duration, the oscillation frequency is varied between the frequency that occurs without the reactive component in the circuit and the frequency with the reactive component permanently in the circuit. A controller determines the duration and controls a switch coupled to the reactive component. The apparatus and method may be used to adjust the oscillation frequency of a resonant circuit or to match the resonant frequency to a driving frequency in a driven oscillating circuit so as to improve efficiency.

A voltage controlled oscillator includes an amplifier having a positive feedback construction, configured to output an oscillation signal of a frequency corresponding to a control voltage supplied to a variable capacitor of a tank circuit having an inductor and the variable capacitor, and a variable current source configured to change an operation current supplied to the amplifier according to the control voltage. When a certain oscillation frequency at which phase noise becomes minimum is set as a reference point, the variable current source increases the operation current supplied to the amplifier as the oscillation frequency becomes lower than the certain oscillation frequency, or decreases the operation current supplied to the amplifier as the oscillation frequency becomes higher than the certain oscillation frequency. With this construction, a voltage controlled oscillator having a stable and sufficiently suppressed phase noise characteristic can be realized irrespective of the oscillation frequency.

A method and apparatus for synthesizing high-frequency signals, such as wireless communication signals, includes a phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer with a variable capacitance voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) that has a discretely variable capacitance in conjunction with a continuously variable capacitance. The discretely variable capacitance may provide coarse tuning adjustment of the variable capacitance to compensate for capacitor and inductor tolerances and to adjust the output frequency to be near the desired frequency output. The continuously variable capacitance may provide a fine tuning adjustment of the variable capacitance to focus the output frequency to match precisely the desired frequency output. During fine tuning adjustment, the PLL may be controlled by a plurality of analog control signals. The analog control signals may be derived by first generating a plurality of phase shifted signals from a divided version of the VCO output clock by using a shift register. The shift register may be clocked by another clock signal at a higher frequency than the divided version of the VCO output clock. The phase differences between the plurality of phase shifted signals and a divided version of a reference clock may then be detected and converted to the analog control signals.
