A boat guide is coupled with a boat support and includes one or more float assemblies. The float assemblies are coupled with the boat support such that forward and rearward ends of the float assemblies are movable between lower and upper positions with respect to the boat support. The float assemblies are independently moveable with respect to the boat support. One or more boat guides may be positioned at the entrance of the boat support to help orient the vessel as it enters the boat support. A boat stop may be positioned at the end of the boat support to position the vessel along a length of the boat support. The boat guide is easily adapted for use with docks, slips, boat lifts, and trailers.

An open ocean-based berthing facility for capturing a ship or similar vessel in order to mitigate wind, wave and current-induced relative motion between the berthing facility and the vessel includes a buoyant platform having an enclosure formed therein for receiving the vessel. When the vessel is positioned within the platform enclosure, it is isolated from the open ocean yet remains afloat since the enclosure is filled with water. When the vessel is positioned within the enclosure and isolated from the open ocean, its movement is coupled to the movement of the platform. Coupling the movement of the vessel to the movement of the platform greatly reduces the relative motion between the vessel and the platform and thereby reduces the risk of both physical damage to the vessel and platform and reduces the risk of injury to operating and maintenance personnel.

A clamp mechanism for an adjustable torsion bar of a boat lift. The torsion bar includes square tubes which fit together telescopically to allow the torsion bar length to be adjusted. Each clamp mechanism includes a pair of opposing angle members lined on the inside faces of their flanges with plates which extend along a part of the length of each flange. The angle members are applied in opposition to one another with the inside faces of the flanges directly against the larger tube and the plates against the smaller tube. The angle members are clamped to the tubes by nuts and bolts applied to lugs which project from the angle members.

A cargo transferring vessel and method for transferring cargo between a small ship or lighter and a larger ship. The cargo transferring vessel is capable of being partially submerged to various depths to permit a large ship to float over the center portion of its hull and is then capable of increasing its buoyance to bring wheels of wheel assemblies on the center portion of its hull into contact with the hull of the larger ship to eliminate relative pitching, rolling and up and down movements between the larger ship and the cargo transferring vessel which might be caused by waves or rough water. A stabilizing apparatus is provided on the side of the hull of the cargo transferring vessel for exerting a downward force on the hull of the smaller ship for assisting in preventing relative movement between the smaller ship and the combined cargo handling vessel and the larger ship. The wheel assemblies are capable of conforming to the shape of the hull of the larger ship and they permit the cargo transferring vessel to be located at various positions along the hull of the larger ship. The cargo transferring vessel and method permit the transfer of cargo between a large and a small ship without the undesirable pitching, rolling and up and down movements between the large ship, the smaller ship and the cargo transferring vessel.

A system has been provided for generating correction command signals relative to the berthing velocity profile of a vehicle in approach of a docking position. A doppler radar system including a radar transceiver projects signals between the docking position and the vehicle and respondingly generates doppler shift frequency signals indicative of the velocity of the vehicle and the relative displacement thereof. A radar counter having preset initial counts stored therein indicative of anticipated initial berthing conditions, responds to the frequency shift signals by counting down from the initial counts in accordance with the doppler shift. Means is included for updating the radar counter in accordance with actual conditions and includes a sonic detector which periodically projects sonic signals between the vehicle and the docking position and respondingly generates corrected count signals in accordance with the reflected sonic energy, indicative of actual distance of the vehicle to the docking position. Means is utilized which periodically transfers the corrected count signals to the radar counter, correcting for errors between actual nd preset initial conditions. A velocity profile generator responds to the radar counter output and generates a programmed desired berthing velocity profile which a comparator responds to the velocity profile generator and the counter for generating command signals indicative of any discrepancy between the actual and desired vehicle berthing profile.
